what do you think happened,


I went out to lock chickens up tonight, and the australorp thats been nursing the nestbox for a couple of weeks but roosting with the others, is in the nest box tonight, she is fluffing, and her belly is plucked bare, and making noise, so i think i will give her a couple of days and see if she is going to be setting day and night and then set some eggs under her, what does everyone use to mark the eggs that they set. so i dont get them confused with the fresh eggs.

Thank you, I was pretty upset about it. I think my main issue was too high of humidity as most of the eggs had extra goop in them upon eggtopsy. I actually have the last remaining duckling in the incubator that is mostly out of the shell, s/he was malpositioned and pipped upside down in the small end of the egg. I went in and chipped a little bit of the shell off before I had to leave for work this morning and gave the membrane a good coat of vegetable oil and wrapped it in a wet paper towel set. I was terrified that s/he would get stuck to the membrane and suffocate so I put an overturned glass measuring cup in the bator to put the duckling in so it wouldn't dry out as fast.
Here's a really bad picture of the lone duckling. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it pulls through. I want a fluffy adorable ALIVE duckling tomorrow morning.

Oh and I use a pencil to mark my eggs. That was what I always read to use.
 
To the folks here that have ran into issues with havin to help baby birds out of shells...

If a baby starts bleeding cause of a tear or by its belly cord, and is bleeding badly. Roll the baby in flour as it will help clot the bleeding and could help and save your baby (s). I had to do this with a few this yr and all but 1 was saved.

Being my 1st time using bator, some chicks had issues with getting out of egg. So when I stepped in to help, I had bleeding issues to deal with so this helped .
 
I decided to try the dry hatch method this time. It's working better than the other way! My chicks were due to hatch on Easter, but they started yesterday. I've got about 10 so far.
 
I am tentatively posting pictures of my muscovy duckling. He was scooting around around the bator this morning but isn't fluffy yet. He seemed really tired this morning, I hope he perks up.



Poor little guy/gal is all alone, I'm trying to find another duckling or two but I haven't had any luck so far.
