Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My husband stopped at the paper recycling place by Lowe's yesterday and got me a stack about 18 inches tall, so hopefully that will get a lot done. I used to have him stop there at night when I was all crazy into couponing lol I imagine he is SOOOO happy I am not doing that anymore. After a while I realized that most of the stuff I was getting for free/cheap with the coupons was junk food and not worth all the time I put into it. I have been using free downy dryer sheets for the past 2 1/2 years and am sad that we are down to our last two boxes.

I also used to fill my whole fridge with free Smart Balance milk, until I realized my son was allergic to the sunflower oil that was in it.

Will a bobcat try to get at chickens, or have any of you had one eat yours? I love bobcats, and would be very hesitant to take one out unless it was already doing damage. Seems like they would be more secretive than other critters and stay out of human areas, but I may be wrong. I've only seen them in the woods as a child when I would summer at the tip of the Door County peninsula in Ellison Bay Wisconsin.
Sarah - I usually use several layers of newspaper and cardboard. The worms love it and it's quite effective in keeping the weeds down.

I need help with my eggs they were suppose to hatch on Tuesday but nothing. What should I do toss them? Candle? The brown ones are hard because you can't see anything. Remember I did not keep track of which was which so there maybe older ones in there. I hate to toss babies out.

On a sad note my sister-inlaw died yesterday. I am not sad for her but am for my brother-inlaw. She was one of those people that were never happy about anything or anybody. She told me once that she always hated me because when I walk into a room I expect everyone to pay attention to me! I couldn't believe it just because I smile does not mean I expected everyone to pay attention to me. She was odd. She got down to 75 pounds due to COPD. I am glad I never smoked.

Tap-- how are things now? Saying a prayer for Your Strength & DH's recovery.

Sorry about your in-Laws, Kimmie. Not sure on the eggs.... With ducks, I'd say wait til day 35 and toss. But I have read *somewhere* that serious breeders will always toss late hatchers, as that is a trait that you don't want passed on.

Everybody else: I'm doing newspaper & straw here. Trying to kill some peppermint in fact. So far it's just growing around the edges of the newspaper tho. (I used to coupon too, lots of papers)

About the bobcat, I think that's pretty cool. About shooting it, did I ever tell y'all about the mama fox and her 3 kits in my ditch last spring? I will tell you, I talked to the DNR Sgt and you do not want to ever harm a Protected Species. Fox are Protected, so my best guess is that bobcat are as well. **Hide** your chickens! My grandmother was less than 5' tall and maybe wet weighed 100 pounds and Granny (my mother) when she was 8 or 9 years old both were responsible for killing their chickens. The method they used was cervical dislocation. How is it possible for someone so slight in strength and stature able to do this? Easy........cheat.

After being held upside down with their keel bone pointing up a chicken becomes quite calm. Then while holding them by their feet, lay the bird's head and neck on the ground. Place a broom handle or piece of 1x2 across the bird's neck. Stand on both ends then pull upward.

That bobcat sure is lovely.

Tap, how'd it go?

Kimmie, sorry for your brothers loss. I am also happy your SIL is no longer suffering. It is a horrid way to go. Takes longer than cancer to kill, you, but it is a long slow death. Miserable people need to make happy people miserable too.

Just had to put down our 14 yr old dog. He wasn't feel well this week, so took him to vet. He didn't come back home. Dakota had a large tumor that was inoperable. He will be missed. Dakota was an awesome dog with a quirky personality. He would sit and talk to us. RIP my good friend.
