Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ok. Keep me updated! I will try to pop in a little more often.

I'll keep y'all updated. She really doesn't seem to want to drink, have only seen her take one sip..but, I'm also not staring at her constantly!

I think I will give the Tylan a shot tomorrow...have a doc appt right by TSC in the morning. I have never used a syringe..

Can anyone tell me what size needle I should pick up?

On one hand I hate giving meds without knowing exactly what's wrong..But, I don't think she's gonna make it if I don't try something...poor girl hasn't even layed her first egg yet (& yep, I checked for egg bound...)

well the day went great...took a bit of the day off but still got a little work done...I put in half the base in the existing pens 1thru4 and moved the silver golden female...

@Trefoil
Sorry about your silkie
@Opa
You are SO right about venison tenderloins!! Glad you've been successful this season,..as have we...

Well. Pretty sure I'm gonna lose my OE pullet, Kaia. Last week she was acting tired, funny. Brought her in for a night..she was eating, drinking & popping fine. Put her back out. Brought her back in the other day..limping, right wing dragging. Still eating drinking. Now. Can't walk. Won't eat. Marecks? Maybe but after research could be a ton of things. Don't know what to do. Just trying to get her to eat something right now.
sorry about your hen she is pretty

Hello everyone

It's been pretty busy around home, with all the cutting and splitting of this winter's firewood. I still drop in once an a while though.
Hi,

Ironically there was a thread on FB with comments from some of the old posters. They were lamenting how the group has changed and we have too many "know-it-alls" and too many newbies asking dumb questions. We went through something similar a few years back when the original thread was shut down and this version came into being.

I've heard a few other comments that questions don't get answered immediately or introductions get lost. This thread moves pretty quickly at times and not all people are willing to read the dozens of posts so things can get overlooked. You can set the subscription notification to be alerted immediately, daily, weekly or not at all.
maybe they should come back and join us it does say All are welcome and they are missed

As one of the "old" members of this thread I can only echo what Raz posted. Occasionally requests for help or advice are overlooked but that is in no way based on who liked or not liked. The sheer volume of posts can often lead to a request not being answered. Add in how busy we all get at times, it is amazing that more aren't missed.
I took the third doe yesterday morning and for supper last night Hope made a egg noodle dish with tenderloin sautéed with onions, celery, and bell peppers. Anyone who has never eaten venison tenderloin can't appreciate how wonderful they taste..
sounds deliious, DH has had no luck again this yr. only , sees mamma and her fawns

A lot of road kill

Are you bringing any cheeses or soaps to chickenstock Silly? If you make any soaps to sell any chance of vanilla??? I am a plain vanilla gal and most everything on the shelf is flowered or brazil nut, ocean scent..... gaa! Nothing beats a real homemade bar of soap. I bought a book a couple years ago and one was in there for goatmilk soap, it made me wistful....but i didn't understand some of the ingredients.

Also for some reason i can't think of goat milk without my old favorite book "heidi", i tried store kind once but heard that homemade was so much creamier. Sigh. I envy you!

Well. She made it through the night. Doesn't seem any better. Doesn't seem any worse. Will pick up some Tylan this morn.

Yea.,she is a very pretty girl. Her daddy is an EE, mama BCM. She got all her coloring from the BCM, body, comb & wattles from the EE. Was so excited that one of the pullets Maia hatched was an OE (the other 2 OE were boys)...other 2 pullets are EE...& seem fine.

If you can make normal soap, making goat's milk soap is easy as pie! And a good soap doesn't need many complicated ingredients. My base is mostly olive oil, with some coconut oil to add nice lather. And of coarse, goat's milk!

Goat's milk will scald when it is mixed with lye to make the lye solution to saponify the oils, so that is one complication. Combat that by freezing the milk, or at least making sure it is very cold. I measure out the milk the night before, then freeze it solid. It is a block of frozen milk. Then, to make the solution, I sprinkle on lye. It will begin to melt as it reacts, since it is very exothermic. But it never gets hot enough to scald. The solution stays night and cold, but warms up to a liquid within a few minutes. If the milk isn't very very cold, slushy, or frozen, it can get rather yucky!

I learned freezing the milk works great by accident. Now I do it every time!
