In the beginning of October the chickens started molting. All but one look like they are done but still no eggs. Last year we started getting eggs around December 9th. We are not using the heat lamp this year like we did last year because it hasn't been as cold. We use about an hour of artificial light in the evening so they can see to get on the roost. I have done morning artificial light in the past but decided against it this year. Any thoughts?

Saw a snowy owl go in the empty barn across the street Thursday morning. No more free range for the flock! The owl was here last winter but my flock was not free ranging then due to snow!

Gearing up(in my mind anyway) for some Feb hatching.
How do you segregate birds for pairings and eggs during incubation / hatching?
Or do you?

When pairing... I have a couple of them dog gazebos from TSC that r zip tied together to make smaller temp breeding pens. Otherwise currently all silks are in one pen and Cochin's in another.

Same here, they look like their feathers have pretty much filled in, but most still haven't started laying yet, though their combs are starting to,really redden up so I know they are close. Mine also starting molting late September/early October...I don't use any artificial light or heat.
I can't remember when they resumed laying last year, but pretty sure it was about this long...I wouldn't be concerned!

I've been inactive on this site for the past 3 years and just came back. I didn't even know there were state threads. sorry to see MI didn't behave? Having trouble learning how to use the site. I posted an injury question in the wrong forum or thread....? I am not trying to cross thread, Is it against the rules to say where my post is so I can get the right advice/help? thanks to all who answer either this post or the one in the wrong place!
