Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Or if there is someone near the mid michigan area that may have baby chicks and ducks they would be selling that would be awesome. Keeping in mind it may be a good 3 months before we would be ready for babies...

so eggcited...bunch of eggs came in and the chicks...all were living except one....so im happy....she thru in i believe four extra...eight bucks a chick tho...yikes..but i wanted them...those are the show quality barred rocks....cant wait to see them grow...have a wonderful day everyone

SC Barred Rocks are beautiful! Congradulations! Chicks this summer; should be some available, and consider coming to Chickenstock, June 20th, in Lansing. Fun! TSC will be one having chicks soon, so getting some later can involve ordering from a hatchery, or finding local chicks, and be very careful about health issues then. Mary

Well Birdmann55,

Never underestimate the destructive capacity of 25 nearly fully fledged ducks.

They opened up a hole in a devider wall and hung out with the ringnecks for a little while.

The ducks were indifferent while the pheasant were doing there best to be patient with the talkative neighbors coming over without invetation.

No real harm other than my bruised ego, the ringnecks are so calm I need not to test there patience.

I was taking my boy to school this morning and we seen our first piebald deer..I know they exist but I have never seen one before today...wish I could have gotten a picture though..was cool seeing one:):)

It's been a crazy week around here. Although there is still snow to be seen the majority of the yard is clear. We spent the weekend cleaning the yard getting ready to put in a flower garden. Then DH and son picked up piglets from down Traverse City way.

My hen with prolapse is doing ok. She has a perforation where she pecked herself. I don't expect her to be around long but she seems a little better each day. Talked to a vet and he said getting her stitched up wasn't likely to help. I asked about culling her. He said as long as she's not in pain just wait and let nature take its course. So she's chilling in a cat carrier.

My son had a lesson in profits today. The pigs have been here since Saturday and have developed a rash so had to visit the vet today. They have sarcoptic?? Mange. So his vet bill comes out of the profits and he was unpleasantly surprised by the bill. DH loaded them into a box in the truck bed and had to go to work so after the vet it was my son and I unloading them. At least that was the plan until he decided he was scared to grab them so I wrestled the screaming flailing pigs out of the truck and carried them to the pen. I managed to get bitten once. I'm sure it looked ridiculous as the pigs are more than half my weight.

I also filled an incubator on Tuesday. ;) Some purchased and some from my own. One of the teachers who's kids saw the chicks hatch at the library has already said they want some. So hopefully some will hatch.

such a cool experience happened today and i thought i would share...pheasant pushing an egg out
the female on the far left...tail up and starting to push

then her feathers begin to go down and she almost walks straight up

her bottom starts to plump out

and then comes the egg...

so if your wondering if the chicken or the egg came first...i would be the egg because dinosaurs laid eggs and they came way before the chicken....LOL
