Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Huge congrats on the new grandbaby! How exciting!

I thought I would share the Araucanas in my flock. They're my group for the 2013 breeding season. Hopefully I can get reliable fertility, then maybe I can offer some hatching eggs.

Pullet # 1, blue, tufted, rumpless.

Same, side view

Pullet # 2, was mottled, but solid black now. Tufted and rumpless.

Same, side view.

Unknown colored. "Pullet" but probably a cockerel.

Pullet # 3, blue, tufted, tailed.

Same, side view

Pullet # 4. Blue-ish, tufted, rumpless. More updated picture.

Same, front view

Pullet # 5. Blue, tufted, tailed.

Same, head pic

Pullet # 6, blue, rumpless, and cleanfaced.

Same bird, up close.

Pullet # 7. Black, cleanfaced, rumpless. Rudimentary tail feathers.

Blue cockerel, rumpless and double tufted. Pullet # 8, black, rumpless, and cleanfaced.

My splash rooster! Love him. Rumpless and tufted.

He hasn't started his molt yet, but I bet it will take care of some of the sun induced yellowing.

My lil cuckoo hen! Rumpless and little tufts.

See? Very tiny!

My black/birchen-ish hen. Rumpless, has one massive tuft!

The first time Aiden had group, I thought he was having an asthma attack, and he was so scared. Happened quick, I rushed him to ER. By the time we fighters, he was nearly fine! Poor guy, hope he has a god nite.
Another fun auto correct by Nova! We moms ARE fighters! Have any of you ever tried eliminating dairy, wheat or eggs in croupy kids? My son has severe respiratory problems so we eat a lot of meat and potato or rice type meals. It seems to help my son and I wondered if any of you had tried it.

Kimmie, Congratulations on a beautiful grandson!!!

Beautiful Araucana's Stacykins! I still don't understand the difference between an Araucana and an Easter Egger.

Congrats Kimmie on the new grand baby, what a doll.

Love the pics of the Auracaunas, very informative for me :)

We finally moved the chicks out of the brooder, they were getting so crowded and they love there new space, they just run and fly all around, we had to make a new coop out of a lean to on the garage, but it ended up being a bigger space and it is dry, that is the important factor.

They have already found there new roost, there are so many of them, we might have to make more roosts, if they all squish close together, I'm not sure they can all fit :)

The hens love to be out after a rain, pecking at all the bugs and worms, they just look so happy.

Hope your Saturday was productive, ours sure was, Grandpa took all 3 boys by himself to the zoo, love that guy! So we finished the new coop, transferred the chicks and almost finished carpeting the downstairs rec room and hallway, so close!

In a nutshell:

Araucanas are an established, blue egg laying breed. They should always lay blue eggs. Their main breed traits are being rumpless (no tail, they have no coccyx or tailbone, dominant gene) and being tufted. Tufts are much different, both in appearance and genetics, than beards and muffs. Tufts are little fleshy peduncles covered in feathers that grow on the cheeks or chin, and all living tufted birds are only heterozygous. The gene is lethal of a chick inherits two copies of the dominant tufting gene (happens 25% of the time if tufted x tufted parents are bred), they die in the shell, just never hatch. It complicates breeding them a little, hah! Araucanas are pea combed, should have willow legs, clean legs, yellow skin, and no 'brown' contamination of eggs.

Easter Eggers are radically different. EEs have no standards and are not an established breed. EEs are a bit closer to Ameraucanas, but still not the same as that breed, either. EEs can have lay any color egg (but often do lay a blue or green egg), be any color, have beards and/or muffs or not, tails or no, can have any comb, any leg color, etc. This does not make Easter Eggers inferior! They're just...different! And they're awesome birds, since you don't have to worry about them having certain traits or not!

Hatcheries often sell birds labeled as Ameraucanas and Araucanas. But no commercial hatchery actually sells purebred Araucanas and Ameraucanas! They sell that hatchery's version of an Easter Egger. Because Ameraucanas and Araucanas have blue eggs in their breed standard, hatcheries falsely sell their unstandardized blue egg layers under the names. It causes a lot of frustration for people who keep the real breeds, and confusion for people who don't know about this.

None of my chickens have ever been purebred or met standards and I think the chickens who are carefully bred do look really nice.

Nova! I kind of liked 'kids grouping', 'moms getting kids to the emergency room =fighters' and a God night!!!

Hmmm...
My son has never had a respiratory issue, before now. He got it from the kids I babysit. I think I have to tell her "If her kids are leaking green/yellow snot from their noses...she should keep them home"

To me that is a no brainer...

That was quite the nutshell
