Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Amy and me did some shopping today and Adrian, and one of our stops was at Family Farm and Home. Really had to talk her down from getting more chicks today. Heck, she almost got me talked into buying some Pink Flamingos for the pond. Would made a heck of a flock guardian for some ducks. Instead, just got a new waterer and some more mealworms.

This weather is for the birds!!

Got my first batch of shipped eggs (I I'd give it one try). Ordered 10+ Buff English Orps and got 17 eggs. Two totally detached cells, 10 loose cells, 5 attached. Have 8+ more coming....Columbian Eng. Orp...project birds, are due today but are MIA in the tracking system. I am into Eng. Orphs! If these have a decent hatch, I'll get some Chocolates. Hurry spring, I am waiting!

Two of the dinner chicks started to sneeze and I put them all on garlic/oregano/thyme and it all cleared up in two days. Didn't want to do antibiotics as I am growing these out organic.

Nothing quite like the call of "Loose Horse" to bounce you outta bed in a hurry. Grumble grumble!!

That old broodmare is too old to be acting that silly.

I am SO ready to get these chicks and ducks outside. Tired of having to clean browsers every day to keep the house from smelling like poop. Chicks are 4 weeks and mostly feathered in. Ducks are just starting to feather in (3 weeks?). If it were in the 40s at night I would give them a huddle box and a heat lamp and put them outside. But it was 8 degrees 2 mornings ago. Uuuuuugh. Come on spring!!!

I'm so with you. I think I'm going to put mine in the garage with the MHP for a few days and then kick them out when it a wee bit warmer next week.
My 6 were mad last night because they piled shavings and paper towel under the pad. Even after I tried pulling most of it out, they slept in a huddle on the opposite end of the cage. So I know they are close to not needing it if we could just actually get spring to show up!

Waiting prayerfully for our chick order from Cackle, shipped Wednesday. It's COLD out there, not much like April. Hope they come Friday morning. Mary

Mary,

How did your chicks fare? Did they all arrive safe and sound?

I have chicks shipping from North Carolina, due to arrive on the 14th. Looking at projected temperatures for next week (highs up to 53 and lows down to 26 for my neck of the woods), I am a bit worried that heat packs won't be enough for them.

We've had snow 5 out of the past 7 days. Are we really sure it's April?

I put my chicks out to the coop last weekend. They are doing well. There have been a couple of escapes but they haven't ventured out with the big girls.
For a brooder, I have a Rubbermade

water trough (110g) so they are draft-free. Heat lamps are triple secured with chain and adjustable for height. Temperature at the wood ship filled bottom has been a steady 70 degrees.
Basically these TSC orpingtons are hardy chicks and I need not worry about them. It is always best to get chicks/hens that are well suited for your location.
And how here's a squirrel.
