It's raining at the moment for pictures, but the chips were a good 5 inches thick, so I should definitely have some areas left that are pretty much chips. I'll get some when it slows down.

Looks more like a very large house cat. I just looked at cougar cub photos, and their spots never turn into swirls, like this guy's.

I'm not seeing the swirls you mention. Those live traps are the large ones. My friend was trying to catch a racoon. The trap gives an idea of scale.
If that is a house cat, then it has to be the largest I've ever seen.
I told my friend to contact the DNR or Conservation Officer.

I'm not seeing the swirls you mention.
I see tabby like markings in several places, faint but there.
Coloring is off for a cougar.
Wondered about the wire mesh to the right, 7 squares?
......what's right behind/next to the cat is not clear.
