Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Mine didn't seem to care. If anything they feel free. They started foraging in places they ought to be foraging but never did before with their rooster's strict schedule and limited number of places he would lead them. But at the same time, they are more careful about staying under bushes and trees. I assume they know they don't have him as protection anymore. They squat for my son now though, which is funny but a huge improvement to being flogged. After I served our chicken stew, my youngest boy confided that he was afraid to go outside because of the roo and was glad he was stew. He needed at least 12 hrs. in the crock pot. I checked him after 6 and he was still really tough. But he was also 12mos. old, all muscle. Tasty though.
glad you got rid of your roo if your son was afraid.. good cull.

Hello everyone! Welcome Candy and poultrylubber; I'm near Perry, east of Lansing a bit. Chickenstock is fun, went for the first time last year. I too have an obnoxious rooster, soon to be in the crock pot. Life is too short to deal with someone like him every day. Mary

Well I sent my husband and son to check for eggs yesterday while I was on my way home from grocery shopping. They found 10!!

Of course, so far today there's only one, so who knows what those ladies are up to!

Eggs are cooking away in the incubator. I'm really hoping that I've gotten my issues figured out and have a good hatch.

My husband and I have done some planning, and some math and I think we've figured out a shelter plan for the meat birds. (The bonus to it is that I'm pretty sure if I really wanted to, I could put some layers in it come winter if I need the space.) Yesterday we bought a truck for him to use for work, so now we have something to haul wood home in too! YAY!

We also have a new foster-dog. He's a Plott Hound and a complete sweetheart and couch potato. I'm not in love with him, but I took him out to the run today and he seemed pretty gosh-darn indifferent to the birds. No obsessive staring, barking, charging. Nothing. He sniffed around and pretty much wanted to keep going. For some reason he doesn't seem to know how to play (with people or other dogs) which is really sad. Our lab tries to get him to play and the hound just doesn't know what to do.

Maybe he'll get more playful as he comes out of his shell more.....chicken-friendly is in the top 3 of the 'requirements' on our list for our next dog.

Welcome to all the newbies, great group here!!!

Had another EE die just like the last one a few weeks ago. They came from townline I have one more if that one dies I am going to start thinking something strange is going on.

Does anyone know what kind of birds they are bringing to chicken stock? I need more chickens!

i have my incubator running with turner in it. and monitoring the temp.. eggs are not in it yet.. will wait till tomorrow.. earlier to set my eggs so i can keep a good eye on it.
The are mostly purchased eggs. I have a few of my own barnyard mixed eggs in there. I sure hope it works out but all I can do is wait and candle them later to see if any have developed.

Hi everyone! Can I join in? I am from up north were the snow has decided that it will stay awhile longer :)
