Hello everyone; So sorry about your nice rooster, Kimmie, sometimes it's just not a good day. My handsome Speckled Sussex boy came to a bad end last Monday; he attacked me once too often, and went to the happy hunting ground. So much for SS chicks this year. Anyone near Lansing or east to Novi have incubator space? I'm saving Belgian d'Uccle eggs, and no hens are interested yet. The girls get broody in their own good time, not when in my time. Mary

Kimmie not a big dummy! Trying to grab those boys is tough and you do without thinking or planning. Sometimes those birds just don't get that you are not trying to hurt them. One of my oldest boys almost did not survive. When he was young I had to herd them in the yard. My wcb polish boy got scared and panicked and ran full tilt into the coop wall - somehow missed the door. He knocked himself out cold, was limp like a rag doll and couldn't walk for three days. One of my first injuries to deal with and I was a wreck. As much as we love them the term bird brain did come with a bit of truth. Anyway I'm sorry your boy ended up hurt but it was an accident. I have to say, in the past I have grabbed them by the legs without thinking.

I put ten chicks under 3 hens on Friday. The two ( silkie and sizzle) sharing the box and a Cochin. The Cochin ened up killing 2 of hers and letting 3 wander off. So I took the survivors and put them with the two moms. The two moved the babies from the nest box to the floor under the nest boxes. I put cardboard on either side of them so the babies wouldn't wander off and gave them their own water and food. They are getting along and the babies go back and forth between them. I am curious what will happen when they start taking them outside.

I spend the afternoon cleaning up the dog's favorite potty area in the yard. It is the first time it has been completely snow free! I heard someone say this weekend " I'm just loving the winter weather this spring!" Hmm not me.

I just found this thread and wanted to stop in and say Hi. I'm in Davison. I haven't had chickens for a few years.. but picked some up this year..2each of ISABrowns Barred Rock Black Australorp and a couple EE. They are about 4 weeks old and just put 16 Marans in the bator last week. This is my first time trying to hatch eggs......should be interesting.

Kimmie, sorry about your roo. But don't beat yourself up over it. Things happen and it's not like you did it on purpose.

I think we have settled on a name for the puppy. I like most of the suggestions y'all posted and several made the list. The little guy has a "T" on his back and when he runs he tucks his bottom in and just runs and runs circles around our other dogs. So we think a good name is "Tucker".

My broody hen, Jewels (black australorp) hatched her babies. They started hatching yesterday & have/are finishing up today. DH noticed the pips yesterday, but other than that we left her alone. This morning I went out there to check & she was laying on a pile of little fuzzies. I got a couple quick pics, but will do a final count later. This morning I saw 2 eggs left under her. This afternoon while cleaning the coop I quick checked again & only felt 1 egg with a pip hole. Not for sure the other egg hatched, I might just have not seen it. She had 10 eggs under her total (8 silkies, & 2 leghorn). She pulled off an excellent hatch.

Kimmie, I am sorry about your Roo. Over on the duck side, sometimes they splint with vet wrap and Popsicle stix. But I have no idea what I'm talking about, just read that.

I forgot who showed that beautiful closet, but wow I love that organization. Ladysranti was it you who spins and knits? Awesome! I almost joined a Spinning Guild myself several years ago but never did, and there's no way DH would ever let me keep sheep.

Farmerboy, Sorry about your basement. Floods are so crummy! Sympathy.

sorry kimmie. I don't know on that one, may have to put down If it was just one leg...... Just in case there's a shred of hope....... this gal is a BYC member and if ANYONE would know how to maybe fix it, it would be her. Many good helps for dealing with foot/ leg issues, and how to give shots (helpful for vaccines too)

I like to organize by color sometimes too; compulsive that way. I started doing it again this last summer when i started working, boy what an eye-opener! Lots of some colors, not enough of others; really helped give me impulse control when i saw those "have to have" items that i had bunches of

Nova I am soooooooooo sad and am a big dumb dummmmmmy!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I hate learning the hard way. Well hubby and I went out and really took a good look at him and I didn't do it but I think I may have caused him to hurt himself because he was babying the leg I hurt. It's the left leg and it is broke. I will have to have my husband cull him. Dang!! So his left leg is broke and the right one I hurt, I am so stupid sometimes. He is a sweet roo to. I picked him up and felt all along the leg when I got to the top you can feel where it is broke and a piece of a ball joint or whatever it is was completely loose from the leg. I think he did it jumping from the roost, To high for a big boy like him I should have thought of that, oh man I don't think I can live with myself.

You might be able to save him! My rooster broke his leg and hurt the other this winter. My daughter was the one who found him flopping around in the coop. He is such a nice, sweet rooster and I didn't want to kill him. So...I put him in a dog cage in the coop with food and water (with vitamin B drops) that he could reach without moving. I also put a heat lamp over the cage. I tucked his leg under him and let him be. I cleaned his cage each day and replace his leg if it was sticking out. After about a week he started standing! About a week later he started hobbling around. Maybe another week later I let him be with his girls...he could get up and down off the rooster but still wasn't quite able to mate. He is now back to 100%!!!!! If he's a good rooster, it might be worth trying.
