Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Nope - no eggs from either girl. I watched them from the house this morning to see if they went off and laid anywhere odd and they pretty much stayed with the younglings. They foraged a bit on their own but not long enough to sit and lay :(. The only duck egg I got was from my Scovy girl.

They probly got worn out from all that fun in your pond! I hope you get eggs soon. Don't forget I still have the 2 young ones too. :)

That reminds me of the little boy whose mother asked "Where did you get those grapes you're eating?" "Off my dog" he replied.

Sorry about the hatch Sam.

Just an idea...........I can set up a store so anyone who wants it could order in the size they want. Let me know asap so I can set up and orders could be sent on time.

Now that's a chicken I could buy. Easy to take care of.. just toss in the wash when needed.

Has anyone here made dandelion wine? The yard is almost yellow, so many of these sunny flowers! No chemicals or sprays are used on this country lawn, ever. I'd love to make use of them before I have to mow (and it really needs mown!).

I've got some 5 gallon glass carboys that haven't been used for beer making in a while. Ohh, now I want to make some dandelion ale! Even better!

Today the Michigan Small Farm Council has submitted the Articles of Incorporation to the state.

I'm proud to be listed as one of the "incorporators" and a member of the board. We represent the urban, suburban and rural small farmer who often gets ignored by the state bureaucracies.

The group was formed as a result of our successful campaign of 2012 to keep wording out of the GAAMPs that would have outlawed farming for 80% of Michigan residents.

Fuzzy, you have to remember that comes from someone (me) who has had chickens in and out of the house all the time - also I am in and out of the henhouse quite frequently without washing my hands (what a bad example!!) and keep unwashed eggs on my kitchen counter. I think that you are unlikely to become ill from your own birds that you are around all the time, as you have been exposed to anything they carry no matter how many times you wash your hands. That is like worrying that kids put dirt into their mouths.
I don't worry those kinds of things because I have enough to worry about.

sorry about your poor hatch, AND your friends loss, that is a lot of birds to lose, Glad he is OK though

A guy outside of town did his tomatoes this way, worked really slick!

I like this a lot, it has a "raw" feeling to it.  He has such a pretty boy image usually , i like him so much better with the glimpse of emotion here. Nice job!

So chickens are considered a domestic animal? I'm confused then why you aren't supposed to keep them inside as pets in most cities?  (I was gonna smuggle mine in, as the lease said only "domesticated animals" were to be approved)

Well, that's the language on the Troy animal permit anyway! But if u r in Troy I think you have a good case. They don't prevent any animals by ordinance but they evaluate each application individually. I have to get an inspection and can tell you all what they look for. Also anyone need want a rooster? Silkie x ameraucauna. I can't keep him per the city.
