Well, I am not gonna email the guy about "coolest coops in US". But I do kinda like my coop (painted it to match farms around here)
And, I am testing uploading a pic as I haven't been able to get it to work yet....

Another Garden City resident goes back to court tomorrow (June 26) at 9:00 am to defend his rights under the Michigan Right to Farm Act. If you have a free morning, please come to the 21st District Court and show your support.
The court is located at 6000 Middlebelt Road, Garden City, MI 48135.

He was worried he wouldn't have anyone to hang out with and was happy there were some "nice people" there. He is definitely not shy when it comes to meeting new people.

I have 11 broody hens! I was considering locking them all in the yard tomorrow and letting everyone else out free range and in the coops. I just don't have enough space to separate them all.

Also do I need to spray sunscreen on a mostly baldrooster? He's getting really red looking.

I locked my JG away from the coop and run area for 2 days then caged her in a wire cage for 2 days Opa says some times it takes 4or5 days. !! hens at once is a lot.

A lady contacted me last night - she has 3 Pekins available. Free to a good home. Her dog is going after them so she thinks it's best that they go (she doesn't have a pond, a pen, or house for them). She is in the Flint/Swartz Creek area, I believe. She does not know the sexes. They are between 2 and 3 months old. She doesn't want them to be dinner and wants them to all go together. If anyone is interested, let me know. I can't take them as I am at full capacity here at my place.

Naglady....sorry for your loss. I lost 3 hens early this spring, one was by accident, then 2 had some sort of illness; the first suffered for 4 days before I found a vet who'd see her thinking it may be eggbound and they could fix it I took her in, it wasn't and I had to put her down...$89.50!!!

The 2nd one, acted the same way and I took her out back and shot her myself so she wouldn't suffer. It wasn't an easy task to do, but part of being a responsible owner. It always hurts, My condolences.
Then 2 to my neighbors Husky, that's 5 for the year!!!
Whoever said living the country life was easy????

Does anyone within an hour of traverse city/Frankfort have a few hatching eggs? I've got another broody so I'm looking for a few new breeds. Looking for large fowl, new hampshires, light Sussex, wyandottes, welsummers, silver pencilled anything, or partridge rocks. I only need 6 eggs. Otherwise I'll just give her some mutts to hatch.
glad check out the roadside egg stands.. i have always asked to see their chickens, and never had anyone turn me down.. then if you like what you see buy a doz of eggs and put them under your broody.. i did that last spring.. one house had all lavender orphingtons, and the other house had a variety of pretty chickens,, her eggs were so pretty there was a mixture of greens,pinks, white,brown, got a a lavender araucana hatched.. it was fun to see what was going to hatch. that can always be a option for you.

My poor old red van is finally going to take a permanent rest. All the brakes are worn out, and the steering parts have gone bad too. It will cost more than its worth to get it fixed. All I did was to take it to the shop on Thursday to get the muffler fixed, and have the brakes checked as I was getting ready for the trip to Chickenstock. In a way, I am glad that I had took it in to get it checked over, otherwise if the brakes or the steering had given out on me when I need it most while I am going 70 mph on the freeway. Grace and I might have gotten hurt bad or worst! Thank God! But I will not miss the 10 mpg and the noisiness! I forget the mileage of the van, will check it tomorrow, but it has seen a lot of miles! So, my parents told me that the best thing for me to do is to buy the purple pickup truck from them. It have a cap that I need to keep things dry when I am hauling feed and other things, and it have 4 wheel drive, and better gas mileage!!!! 15 mpg! It will be my first time to actually have my own transportation. My parent have given me the van, so I have been using it. But, it drained my bank account a good bit when I brought the truck. Boo hoo!

Yep, that was me too. My old blue Mazda minivan "died" the week before CS. Actually, it was the brakes, the suspension and the tires. Between those three things and the 157,000+ miles and 12+ years on it... it was time. I had planned to make two trips to Lansing last week, one to MSU and the other to CS so we bought a new one. I wasn't sorry to see the old thing go. It had survived three toddler boys and all the road trips we took but just about every piece and part had been broken and replaced or abandoned. No accidents, lucky thing (though DH did scrape a dumpster in a parking lot once, forcing us to replace a door). But it served us well. May the new one last us for the next 12 years.

So I tried kicking Souffle out of the coop for a few days to get her off her high horse so she'd stop terrorizing the pullets I'm integrating. But she still whomps on them. I just think she's a mean old biddy. Anyway, it's been nearly two weeks since I brought the two Coronation Sussex home from Farmerboy and they've been living in the chicken tractor for quarantine. Today they moved to the grow-out pen so they can see the rest of the flock. Next week, they'll be put together if all goes well. So far so good. I did stick a couple of their eggs under my new broody but I'm not holding out hope that they're still fertile. I don't recall seeing those nice bullseyes on them when cracking them for eating. I'll check in a few days and if they're not, I'll break the broody. They're such nice birds though. So quiet compared to my chorus I got going on in the coop. Sometimes the girls are downright obnoxious with their noise.


BEARS!!! I have no experience with bears and chickens but I remember when that bear was wandering around our area last year, people with chickens locking up big time. Someone on here said something to the effect of, and I'm paraphrasing, "if a bear wants to get into your coop, IT WILL get into your coop".

Here's a quick video I took of a frog on a barn window last night. It was up pretty high, about 7', because I had the camera at arm's length above my head to capture it. It's been so wet that they've come out of the low lying swampy areas out back to sing on the still wet high grounds. Love the frogs.

Sorry for the losses some of you have had.

I have not told Cindy about the PM I got from someone that wants me to bring chickens to her house, or is that does not want me to bring chickens to her house. Oh well best to bring them.

The only chickens you can bring here had better be plucked and ready for the grill!!

Lunch with my old farmer friend was really nice and it was almost impossible to get away from him. He was really glad to see me. Living alone makes him thrilled to have company just to break the silence.

That is very kind of you Opa. I wish more folks would do the same. We used to go visit the lady down the road from us. She knew my DH when he was a little boy. Then our boys would go help her with her yard work.

We had a black bear in the yard last night and typically this doesn't bother me, but now we have chickens. Does anyone know if the bears will bother the chicken runs and chickens?

Yes!! I agree, get an electric fence if possible.

from what i know of bears, even if they don't go after your birds, they might destroy things out of boredom/curiosity/because they can. black bears tend to prefer fruits and the like to meat, but i have never known of one to turn down an easy meal.

When you consider the fact that most people get their Aracauna from a hatchery to start, and we all know they are clearly mis-labeled, you Aracauna breeders should campaign to get them labelled properly at hatcheries. However, not all hatcheries are mislabeling, but just don't breed to a rumpless tufted standard. Higher hatch rates that way.
