Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I got my first deer ever this evening. I applied for a doe tag when they become available, and I got one. So I got my doe!

I have an antlered tag, but I know I won't fill it. Ever since opening day, the bucks I'd seen on my game camera are are not showing up. They've either been hunted or are laying low. They've got to cross about twenty acres of open field owned by my neighbor (who also owns the woods, and hunts there), so it is almost impossible for a decent buck to survive crossing that open space to make it to this 30 acres property. They get taken before they make it.

Always the smarta$$
Its better to be a smart a than a dumb *****. Congratulations on your upcoming grandchild. I have never had what it took to kill one of my chickens, that could be why I have a coop full of roosters. They are very pretty and only argue when out free ranging.

I see ur from Holland, that's a bit of a drive. Been there once when I worked for Johnson Controls, that was probably the most beautiful plant i had been to. It was also in a beautiful area, Holland was lovely and I was only there for 3 days, but actually thought about putting in for a transfer, but all my fam is here. I don't know how to hatch eggs, I have only had chickens since this past summer, so I'm still learning alot. Hoping I get a broody hen that will do that or I'm gonna have to buy more stuff for lil ones and learn how to do whatever you do to hatch eggs. lol I seen ur birds on the phoenix forum and they are very pretty. How is the general temperament of that breed?
Cochan, silkie, or lt brahma's are usually pretty reliable broodies, other breeds as well, sometimes.

See... I love my roos. I love my hens. I eat my extra roos. I keep my hens. I have no problem now eating the extra boys. I have 2 right now that really should be heading to camp, but... they're so slow to mature! Dang faverolles... LOL. ANYWAY, I have no problem eating them, I do go out of my way to make sure they are happy, and healthy while they grow. Even love on them on occassion. By that, I mean, I comb stroke and shoulder scratch them on the roost. I don't do the deed though. I just can't do that part... Not yet. One day maybe.

About the phoenix temperment. So far so good. I will say that I am thinking I am going to have to go out of my way to make pens for them next spring. Something moveable, so they can be out, but not get in trouble. Gainsborough is a real pita. He's friendly enough, but he hates Mr. Ed's tail, and he is starting to hate on Red Devils tail. He doesn't start fights with the other roos at all though. He will run like hello when he sees Strutter coming... Then I think If I were a 4 pound cockerel up against a 15 pound roo... I might head the other direction too.

Gainsborough...

He's got an awesome piercer of a crow too. hate when he goes in the garage behind me and belts on out. Mr. Ed does the same thing.... He's even louder...
Mr. Ed... sans long tail feathers

Mr. Ed has a faverolles hen... Loralie... as his favorite... In his harem he has Vanilla..white silkie, Ekta the serema, a silkie/cochin cross, and Loralie. On occassion he also has Amber, an amber sex link. Yes, I know, very original on her name.

So... So far, will all the roos in the yard, I have not had a problem with the phoenix boys or the yoko boy being running free with them. Except the tail problem... Honey, the phoenix hen, she on the other hand, is very flighty. She will take flight to cross the yard. She's not one to be picked up, and will only allow me to handle her on the roost. She's ok with it then... She's such a pretty thing.

Hi everyone I went to the Shelby twp. Meeting last night ,they had a meet and greet . They also had an open forum to hear residents opinions on there projects they want to work on and items they or the residents want to see changed. Well I put on the table to redefine the animal orindiance . If any of you have gone through this process , any info would be helpful.

@Stacykins
Congrats on your first deer:woot
While I was excited about my first buck 2 years ago, I will be honest; I personally hunt to put food on my table, so when I've had a choice of "dinner" in front of me, I've whatever presented the best option to fill the freezer! And in each case, I was just as excited whether buck or doe!! Again, that's just me...

@ladyrsanti
I absolutely love your new coop. You have done a stellar job! Your birds are gorgeous, too :D

Everyone else...
Welcome to everyone new!
Thanks for all the advice & chuckles & words of wisdom in recent posts :)

Quote: NICE JOB there Stacykins. I had to give up deer hunting this year, brought our camp trailer home and have an in-law stayng in it out back till a new place can be found. Just placed an order for 6 fertile eggs but they are backordered and I won't get them till late January probably, but that will be my first hatch next year. Lavender Ameraucanas.

Thanks! It being my first deer makes it extra exciting for me. Most native Yoopers get their first when they're like, 12, hah! Good thing I'm not a native Yooper! Though I actually may have a hunting lease lined up now for next year, quite serendipitously! I was talking to another neighbor how my chance for a buck is practically zilch and he told me that there were about four hunters in the woods overlooking that open area. BUT, his father owns a 40 acres parcel of hardwoods and an old (still productive) apple orchard, and he doesn't like to hunt anymore. The neighbor will ask if I may hunt on it next year! The land is 1/2 mile down the road, so it isn't far. If I am allowed, they I may break out my bear recurve for some intense practicing, and do some bowhunting instead. I used to be so good with it, but it has been a long time since I've used it.

That is awesome on the lavender Ameraucanas! The lavender color is so pretty! Hopefully when they do come for you, you have a great hatch!
