Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

@RaZ :goodpost:
What do people think happens to chickens on a CAFO? They're raised in a small space and culled when they no longer lay or are butchered to become our "boneless skinless breast meat." Whether you slaughter your own, have done for you or put on Craigs list for someone to do later on its still the same end and cycle of food. BUT the big difference is small backyard chickens and small farm operations are just more humane!

The world is without a clue, except for a very select few! ;)

That article was largely refuted with verifiable facts some months ago. However it does serve as a warning to know what you are getting into when you get animals to care for.
Didn't see that part of it, got a link?

ETA: never mind. If I'd have clicked the links to the 'sanctuaries' in the article, I would have doubted the story in the first place....my bad for half assed research and citing.

My oldest son works for a company that buys laying flocks. The birds are euthanized on site, ground up on site, pumped into a tanker truck, then transported to a factory that spins the liquified chickens to remove the oil. The pulp is then cooked and dehydrated, reground and packaged to be used in animal feed production. He is in marketing but often goes to the production facility and says you wouldn't want to live downwind.

is everyone's birds holding out ok with all the wind and cold?

Barley!
3 roos with comb frostbite and lost a hen. Otherwise everyone in the coops hanging in there. Have 3 heat lamps going. I hate the cold! I have 66 chickens, 7 dwarf bunnies, 7 mini horses and 2 barn kitties.
2 days ago, one of my does had some baby kits and they all froze. Poor baby bunnies.

:( Sorry about your Bunnies and Hen and Roos.

Mine are OK, a couple of RIRs have their tips showing a bit of frostbite. That's from the last cold snap and then the warm up with the snowmelt.I have 2 heat lamps and a 75 watt for some light.the coop is fairly dark during the cloudy days. I turn on and off according to day time /night time temps. I had to put a wind block in front of the west window too and unfortunately it blocks out daylight too. Also my BO can't make up her mind if she wants to be broody or not. But she is keeping the eggs from freezing for the most part! :) Her foot is the samewith no change so far. So all is good in NW Ohio.
