At CS2014, the speaker talked about deworming chickens. When am I supposed to do that and how? I thought I read somewhere you're supposed to do it in the Fall/Spring...

No eggs in a full week. Going to have to run to the store for Christmas baking, darnit!

I am loving this mild winter for my first winter with the chickens. 12 more days until solstice!

Turned around & couldn't find these two. Looked up and realized they finally discovered the stairs!

Yes, she did. I absolutely love Caroline, Larry and their little guy. We have stayed in touch all this time, and have visited one another on occasion. She still has the two yak girls that she bought from us. She has borrowed one of our bulls a couple of times, for breeding, so she has calves from those girls, as well.

Yeah, I believe I saw that bull you had over there, about 2 years ago. Handsome looking fella. Me and her usually swap labor in the spring when we need to get hay in. Really going to be looking forward to when Trent is finally big enough to toss haybales around.

Don't run to the store...I have them,$3 per dozen. I work in Holland and can bring them for you if you want meet (I'm by south Meijer)

Yes, you probably did. His name was Norbhu (Precious Gem in the Tibetan language). He was our only Royal (black and white with pink nose). We do not breed for Royals-his mom came to us pregnant, unbeknownst to us or the person who sold her to us. I lent him out to another friend last Winter, for breeding, and decided afterward to go ahead and process him. I just didn't have use for him as a breeder here. I needed the meat more, and his hide will be gorgeous! Even though his time with the girls was very limited here, we were surprised by a heifer calf this past July, who has to be his. I ended up getting a baby out of him, after all, and she's beautiful. I named her Tesla.

From the pictures that I see posted on FB, Trent will be tossing hay bales around in no time. What a doll!

It has just occurred to me when you talk about duck eggs, I think I have two female call ducks but we have never seen an egg from them. Anyone know how to tell sex on calls? Links? Maybe I need to go read up!

Tap, Like Lisa said. My hens have a distinct sound from the drakes. That's an early sexing trick. Later on the drakes (some) get tail curls. I had a drake that had tail curls one year, none the next year, and had them again this year. Also some breeds develop "male" markings as you already probably know. I have KC and Pekin ducks. The eggs look about the same - large and yummy! I'm not sure about Calls and their particular traits. I do know my ducks are in "winter rest" mode and laying very few now. During the summer I was getting an egg a day from each hen. Also, the drakes seem to lead all ducks around the yard - whereever he goes the hens follow. And, the drakes will sit outside the duck house when the ladies are inside (during the day) doing their thing. I like ducks even though they are quite messy.

Hmmm..... I do recall Caroline mentioning having a yak roast a while back. I guess that was part of him?

Caroline mostly just keeps hers out in her sheep pasture. I'm not exactly sure of the rest of their requirements.
