What do you mean by split hatches? I am just wondering if it is ok to integrate chicks of varying ages into the same brooder. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Split hatches are when eggs are placed in the incubator on different days. This means that the hatches will also be spaced out. Since you should not open the incubator for the last 3 days of incubation, plus however long until until your last egg hatches, it makes it difficult to turn less developed eggs without disturbing the soon-to-hatch ones and risk losing chicks.
You can integrate birds that are close to each other in size, with chicks usually up to a few weeks in age apart.
Ours already did once this year and we also have heat tape. It been hard to keep the snow where we want it this year with all the wind.
We wrapped a towel around the pipe, then put a sheet of bubble wrap and an inverted foam cooler over the top of the pump, and it thawed. Now it is leaking again, so we have to try adjusting the nut at top of the rod. If that doesn't work, we will have to pull the rod and try replacing the seal at the bottom end. All that will have to wait until the temperature is warmer than -2.
I have approx $2k into my flocks,$20k into my show mini horses, and $2k into my iris flower field!
Yes I have very expensive hobbies BUT its my money and hobbies and I don't care about $ when it comes to quality!
I don't have quite your investment, but I don't mind spending a little extra on quality. And I always feel a little disgruntled when people say they want some (carefully selected, expensive) eggs or breeding stock, but they want them cheap.
Your irises are beautiful!
