Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hurry!!!

Do you know garlic should be planted in fall (October/November) if you want good full heads at harvest in July?
I do, but they had these bulbs on clearance for like 2 bucks or something, and there were 80 onion sets for 25 cents, so I figured why not, I would give it a shot and see what happens.

I spent a good deal of time outside today and had my camera part of the time so here's some pictures.

This is my Russian Orloff Igor. I throw the scratch and everyone runs except him. He stands at my feet and waits to be fed by hand.

Perry and her new batch of babies.

About half the flock.

1mutt - these are from your eggs. Lucy the Lemon Blue looking at the camera is my favorite.

This is one of the Guinea nests that is being raided.

Nest at the base of the tree.

This is the other nest.

It hasn't been raided yet today. Likely because I was waiting with the gun. Crows and ravens are so smart.

I was out in the coop a little bit ago. I wrangled up the ladies/gents and then decided once they were in the coop it was time to add some identification rings to their legs. While we were ringing up the legs, I hear one of the hens make a bunch of noise, and I look over and find Rudy the rooster biting and holding the hen by the comb! He's being quite the angsty teenage bully if I do say lol.

Hello to you all again! I was away for a while and I am back again! Let me reintroduce myself.
My name is Theron and we raise a variety of poultry here in mid-Michigan.
We had a large cutback and now raise just Sebastopol geese and a few different breeds of bantam chickens.
Had many large life changes here at Theron's Fowl Farm.
Had to move our birds due to a zoning issue and now lease property at a family friend's where we raise the poultry.
I got a job with a local fast food restaurant and within a two years I went to a crew member and am now the 1st Assistant.
The job takes away a lot of time from poultry raising, but we are continuing it on a smaller scale.

...
Then again, some folks never outgrow the need for crisis and drama.

While all that has been written is certainly true, please allow me to clarify my position, lest anyone begin to think that I am losing sleep over the AI matter or creating drama unnecessarily.

While we cannot control many things, some things we can. Therefore we wear seatbelts in our cars, helmets while we cycle, etc etc etc. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

And regardless of the number of years anyone has been raising poultry, the fact of the matter, as evidenced by SCIENCE, not just the media, is that these strains are New, as in unseen previously. Outbreaks affecting these numbers, again, not seen before. And using what we know, again, from SCIENCE, that in China, the ducks were the "melting pot," were this virus settled and stirred before it passed to humans. So while someone here might not be at all concerned, I am, because my ducks do not rate high enough on my importance scale for me to ever willingly expose my human family to a virus that has the potential to cause death or make my family sick. And I do think each of you would very likely agree with me there. And thus, I do care what measures my neighbors may or may not take, bcz at least that way, I can make some informed decisions for myself about the level of risk that I am willing to take.

And I am sorry, no I do not recall the reason behind the clear iodine, but I am positive that it was in Haunted's thread.

Just got in from feeding the critters and wanted to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day.  After serving in in the Armed Forces for 31 years active duty and finishing in Iraq I can say that everyone should keep it in mind that we as citizens owe it to guys and gals that lay it on the line to let us keep our affairs the way we like.  That said:

Going to be a busy weekend trying to finish another goat house for my boys.  Start my new pig pen and pig quarters.  And just general gardening chores.  I'm sure everyone is going to be super busy since it's that time of the year to be super busy (or super lazy and enjoy the sunshine)!

I'll be at Burley Park on Monday.  The huge flea market off 131 north of GR, just east of Newago.  It's pretty fun and only happens on big holidays like this one, the 4th, Labor Day, and once in Oct.

That's it.  No more computer till next week...
Thank you for your service to our Country and for fighting for our freedom ~ God Bless You!

I guess im must be the only one thats not freaking out about the AI. Im gonna do nothing other then what im already doing as i see way to many folks freaking over something that has been around and happening forever. Its just the media blowing it all out of the water and making a huge issue.
Wild birds been here hundreds of years spreading the same stuff as they always have. And when the scare settles down... a new one will arise.
Just my opinion

Thank you.
X2
