Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey guys!

Hi Dave and Fox, welcome to BYC!

The most of the eggs in the bator hatched. I got 4 duds (3 had chicks formed which is always a bummer). I also snuck in a couple silkie chicks I picked up at FFH today. I don't think DH will notice them for quite a while with the 25 other chicks! Actually they will stick out like sore thumbs soon enough! LOL! I also have a hen that's gone broody too so now I'll have to deal with those chicks if she succeeds. I slipped in some of the eggs I rather she hatched. Every day I have to lift her and pull out eggs from other hens. I put in a second box and a few hens used it, so hopefully they'll leave her alone.

We put up a bunch of fencing to keep dogs and chickens/turkeys out of the garden, and another section the other day to keep the dogs away from the chickens/turkeys. We put up a separate run for the turkeys and I cleaned out an area I use for feed storage, and this will be the temp coop/run for the new chicks. I will bring some of the chicks to CS20, they are a barn yard mix.

I have been thinking about doing Coturnix quail... but just mulling in around for now.

Still trying to work on the garden prep work but the rain isn't really allowing the dirt to dry out much. I am going to try to put some spinach and lettuces in the garden now. I don't think it's too early for them, but hopefully not too late either. Meijer by me brought in some garden start plants where the house plants are kept, and they rang up as house plants when I picked up some dill herbs. I already have tomatoes and green peppers started. I am also trying to start my own sweet potato starts.

Looks like lock down for us in MI, will continue past mothers day to May (14th or 15th?) with the mandatory face mask to be out in public. I will be staying home... I refuse to wear a mask. Luckily I went to the mill for feed before this took affect today.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Masks are your friend! Why not wear one? I've been in mine since at least mid-March when I have to go shop (TSC, Costco, and Meijers are about it!). Not getting sick, at least until there are possible treatments that are better, is the plan here.
Meanwhile, it's chick season!

You can plant lettuce in the spring as early as the ground can be worked, it's very tolerant of freeze. I planted my first row 3d ago (then of course we got 2" of snow).

I know some people get claustrophobic in masks. A bandanna is a good compromise, still protects other folks from your possible germs, which is the whole point. There has been an outbreak near here related to a person who worked up here, but was traveling downstate on weekends to visit friends and family. He ended up on a ventilator. Since he went daily to the post office to pick up mail, and handed out the mail in the office, he exposed who knows how many people before he became ill.

Its just an all around pain in the butt, and there's not much else we can do about it now other than just social distancing as much as we can. Hopefully the powers that be will figure out how to set up large drive up testing for the Corona so that we can finally start isolating it. If not, we might not get to have chickenstock this year.

Testing will not be the answer.....too many variables, including the tests themselves.

Finally a sunny day again!
Broody is in the groove, getting up daily.
Will candle again soon, today is Day11.

'Interesting times'!!!
Good tests will be helpful, and right now there are too many 'untested' tests out there, and nowhere near enough good ones, or much understanding of what the results actually mean.
Meanwhile, we are staying home, and are so grateful to have space, critters, and room outside to garden and watch the wildlife. Visiting by phone and at a distance isn't best, but okay for now.

We are hatching like crazy, lots of orders for chicks to be shipped. We also shipped hatching eggs that actually hatched a few from the dozen sent! Owners are thrilled!

Brett found crawlies on the hens the other day, mass powdering has begun and officially mite season :(.

darn it... hate those little buggers.:rant
