Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Had the rain, thunder and lightening last night. Drove the one dog nuts, shaking and hiding under tables and desk. Looks like it will be cloudy here until later tonight when more rain is forecasted. I do love these milder temperatures though. Makes outside chores so much easier to do than the cold.

DH had an appt with the ortho surgeon yesterday. Everything seems to be healing as should be, meaning essentially the swelling is going down. Will have another follow up appt next Monday, then surgery on Tuesday to install plate(s) and screws in order to repair. DH asked what the standard/percentage of loss is with injuries like this after all healing was completed. Dr said 50-60% return to normal after a couple of years. This does not take into account my DH's osteoporosis or arthritis. I'm wondering if he will ever be able to ride his horses again, building our house has definitely been postponed and will take much longer to complete once started, and fishing in the icy river will probably never happen for him again.

It is amazing how one moment in time can effect your plans for life so much.

if there is one thing in life I've learned.....it's never, say never....... the human spirit is an amazing thing.

glad to hear he's progressing in the right direction and I hope his osteo doesn't complicate his healing.

Brethern-- don't give up on dh being able to do things yet. I have a cousin who 30 years ago was fallen on by a horse- crushed her pelvis. They wired, pinned, & plated it together and told her she would never walk again. Wrong. She went on to be a an electician. It takes time and a lot of effort, but if he sticks with it you'll be amazed at what he accomplishes. Here's sending good wishes your way.

Praying for your family Brethern!

I've had moments that were life changing.

Good morning everyone. Misting in the "more up north but not as quite north as I could get" here. Yesterday was gorgeous. Met a nice gal who came over to see my ducks and essentially bought the lot.

I am divesting myself of all things ducky and just concentrating on chickens and guineas now. So now I'm just a "pretend" swampducks. I've sent her a link to this forum, I hope she'll join.

In the meantime my 2 blue andalusian roos are squaring off at each other. No one has gotten bloody yet but it's not looking like anyone wants my extra so he's probably heading to freezer camp this weekend. He has attacked my leg twice now, yesterday while my back was turned I suddenly felt a pounding on my calf. I had to kick him like a football to get him to stop. So, he's outta here. The other one has never tried to attack me.

I've spent the last couple weeks re-arranging my living room. DH is a movie nut and I am a music nut and we've got what I call the "wall of sound" on the east wall. We integrated it all together including the old turntable my brother gave me. Still need a long RCA cable to hook the stereo receiver into the "home theatre" receiver (please note the pretentious spelling of theater, it makes ALL the difference) and make the whole thing an even bigger WoS. So to make this all work (this IS our main entertainment up here, that and the internet) I've arranged all the chairs in an arc in front of the WoS so it's like a movie theater. The sofa is stuck in the back for the dogs. The fireplace is behind us, too but we didn't even use it last year. It's the best arrangement to have visitors but NO ONE EVER VISITS. I figured it's usually just me and Hal, so WHO CARES? When my sister and her BF come for Christmas, the guys will be hunting and my sister and I can do what we want, bake cookies, listen to music, watch the Muppet Christmas Carol. I even joined the general store's movie rental club. They don't have much but they've got more than I do.

So I'm all set for winter. Mostly.

Hi all, I have been MIA due to a bad case of flu [is there a good one?] It has really taken the wind out of my sails and lungs. Makes me kind of glad I don't have the chickens now.

I logged on to see that I was 500 posts behind!
So I just skimmed...
Brethern, my prayers go out to you and your DH

I hope all goes well for him and that he will heal well and that you will have the patience you need.

Welcome to all the new members, there are some really special wonderful folks here!

Kind of grey and gloomy here but at least the temperature is mild. All of the chickens are doing their chicken chores.

As for me, I'm going to take a short nap. Today's docent duty wore me out. There 50 second graders and a few chaperones. We saw a beautiful 8 point buck about 15 yards in the fen and I didn't have my bow. Not that you can hunt there. The kids certainly got a kick out of seeing it.

Miracles happen. I think they try to give you the worst case scenario so people are less likely to sue...
I hope their scenario doesn't hold him or you back from what he could really achieve.
So I'm all set for winter. Mostly.

These temps have the bugs out in force today. I saw bees, skeeters, ladybugs... I feel like I am covered in bugs! I am glad I do not work tomorrow. I have coop cleaning to do. I have those roosts I want to re-arrange also. I'd like to do it today, but I hear the thunder coming in...

SO, those buckets that Olive explained to me how to build... I just bought a bag of feed today. Two weeks ago I bought a bag of 24% and corn and did a 2/3-1/3 split. I used the last of that feed this morning to fill the feeder for the little chicks. I bought a bag of feed today, but they didn't have the 24% so had to get the 20%, Very irratating. Anyway, I couldn't do the same split, so did 3/4-1/4 split. Still have corn left from the original bag, and have about 10 pounds of the feed after filling the homemade feeders and a 7 pound feeder. How awesome is that. That has cut my feed bill nearly in half those feeders.

With the 7 pound hanging feeder, it is not hanging. What I did with that was take the base off my 3 gallon waterer, set the base down, then set the 7 pound on that, so there is like a trough on the outside of the feeder and it is up off the floor. No feet knocking it over. I haven't lost feed from that either with the chicks. YEAH!

I normally buy 3 bags of feed plus some a month. I usually get 8-9 days from a bag. Today made it 14 days, but I still had feed in the homemade feeders, so probably could have gone 16 days. I am so not complaining. TWO WEEKS!

The SLW is still in the garage. She has no light except the heat lamp. She is actually quite a bit perkier today than yesterday. She does have egg yolk all over her bottom though. I got some antibiotics... We'll see what we can do. Maybe with no light for a week or more, I can get her back into health, even if she turns into a lawn ornament.

I have 5 dozen eggs on the counter. Going to worm everyone tonight. I did just worm Esdee, but its been enough days, going to do a follow up on her and a single dose on the others. Not supposed to worry about egg with drawl with the ivermectin, but just to be on the safe side, we'll chuck the eggs for a few days. Not like we are getting much right now any how.

Also, can't find my normal toed NH. Didn't see no leaves scattered like there was a struggle, no feathers. Hope I just over looked her. Worry about that fox finding his way this way. Carl hasn't lost any more birds, since he saw it, and they did just do the field, so I am hoping it hightailed it away for a bit..

And, My oldest son made me proud today. They have Bible Club at his school. He asked me if he could join. Sweet! I don't believe in pushing people into things, and certainly not children when it is important like this. We read the childrens Bible at home and all, but this was HIS choice to join this group of students in Bible study at school.
