Interesting...I've been watching her the last couple days and it's getting worse...like about to the point where I might just put her down...

She looked pretty bad today. She can't really get around - I think her 'hip' is dislocated, or a tendon/muscle got stretched - I think the problem is somewhere where her leg meets her body. I keep trying to feel her but I haven't found the problem yet.

She can barely put weight on it, and she's mainly just been laying on the floor. Today her toes were curled up too. When she falls the whole leg totally just sticks out behind her. Not good....

My friend had one that broke / dislocated a leg. She got around fine, her leg just stuck out at a weird angle, and she had a funny hop. She did fine until a stray dog found her and a few of her friends

I need to come up with something to keep her leg straight....I am thinking a finger splint. But not sure where to get one, except a dr.

Christy (the hen) is enjoying some watermelon right now.

The funny thing about this hen is she is the wildest chicken we have ever had. So this is really something for her to be confined and handled.

Also an interesting fact: Every egg we have incubated of hers has hatched and they have all been black.

CVS has them

Thanks- I will try there! I thought of popsicle sticks but then I have to pad it someway (which I don't have any sticks) So I thought the splint with padding would be simpler?!?

Poor thing. Would confining her in a cat carrier help her heal up? Good luck on that decision.

Well...she's an extra 'mutt' chick my broody hatched out this fall. I was planning on processing her and a few others anyway once they got big enough...SO...I may just have to end her suffering if she isn't showing improvement tomorrow.

I hope your hen improves! She sounds like a pretty popular gal.

I'm so disappointed I missed the northern lights. I've seen them once before but had no idea they were out last night.

What is this walking you ladies are doing? I know I have short legs but you guys must be moving it to be walking just under 5 miles per hour? I circuit train both outside and inside on the treadmill and 5mph is a nice little jog for me. I guess I'm slower than I thought. LOL! And that's saying something because I know I'm slow.

Good Morning!

Went out to the coop and we have a small skunk in the leg trap.

But we also have more digging in the coop. I have no idea how it is getting in there! It is digging from the inside and I don't think there is anyway for it to get inside. Unless of course, from the roof. So that will be today's project. And I am going to quick crete around the inside of the coop so the animal cannot dig

Sarah, I have a coon sized live trap if you'd like to borrow it.

ijohn1, I've been working at winterizing my runs. Last winter I had to shovel snow from the runs and this year I've decided to cover them. I have also built cages inside of my large fowl coop to hold my roosters. I was diligent last year in applying Udder Balm Frost Protection on the lone rooster I had and yet, he still had his comb and wattles frost bitten.

What material do you use to cover your runs?

A friend gave me the heavy duty cover from one of those temporay garage tents. It gave me enough material to cover the large fowl run 16x16 and two sides.

Glad you had a nice time and it's always nice to get more birds.

I got a nice email from Babzoo yesterday and she and Vicki will be coming to visit in the near future. Her email reminded me how nice this site has been and of all the wonderful people I have been privileged to meet. I look forward to meeting more of you in the future.

With that being said, I will try very hard to acknowledge everyone who posts on the Michigan thread. Should I miss someone's post please accept my apology as the slight will not be intentional. Sadly I have heard from others that feel their posts are ignored and I for one will try to be alert to peoples questions and posts because I don't want to risk losing a potential friend.
