It seems like summer flew by again this year, but like you I am looking forward to fall. Not the winter that follows it, but what can you do?

I do love autumn; pumpkins, apples, cider, fall parties, sweaters, the beautiful leaves on the trees, hunting, warm comfort foods... I look forward to all of that every year.

Although looks like we may be in for a snowy winter so at least that's promising. If it's going to be cold at least give me thigh deep snow.

As usual we're more than sold out of chicken again this year and I keeping telling myself I should have another batch going in the incubator now, but I really don't think I'm going to. It's hard when the demand is there and persistent, but limits are limits and I've reached mine for this year, I think. The kids are going back to school, extracurriculars are starting back up, everything requires more time/attention in the colder months, I've got a gilt set to farrow soon, have to get the winter pens set for the breeding herd, we'll be welcoming vicki2x2's goose flock home sometime next week and need to get them settled and acclimated, there is a hoop house outside begging my attention, 16 more 4x8 raised beds that need to be built and filled, I've got a few big projects in the pipe for "the day job"; I just don't think chicks are going to be in my fall plans this year. Since harvest will be in full swing soon making me an almost-single mom all of the above should keep me more than busy until hunting season, then I'll be in the woods when I'm not working and after that is the holiday season and we all know what a blur that is. In fact, typing this all out has only made me realize May 2011 and spring chick season will be upon us before we know it!

It's just not going to be me. Not this year.

And now that I've said that I'll probably have jinxed myself and run across some sort of can't pass them up hatching eggs sale or something. Very correct standard partridge cochins, anyone? LOL! That is one thing I will end up breaking my own "no pets, everyone has to pull their weight" rule for.

I'm mostly a city girl. My oldest sister had a good sized farm up near Saugatuck and I'd stay there in the summers. Because I was even sicker growing up, not many people would let me do anything (although I got to do a LOT more at my sister's even though she was old enough to be my mom too), so the animals became my life. I have lived in the city all my life and always wanted somewhere where I could have farm animals. I'm very fortunate to have met a man who loves them just as much as me. But I have always wanted to go hunting, but no one I knew hunted because where I grew up most people didn't want to get dirty.

Last night before we went to sleep, we were talking about fall. I said I have always wanted to go hunting, just to say I did it once. Aric does all the dressing, etc. He said he'd be more than willing to take me but he only has one gun. Oh well, maybe some day. I also said I wanted to go fishing. I used to be on a competition (sorta like 4h for fishing) fishing team, but haven't gone in about 10 years. There again, no poles. Ugh lol.
Oh well, I'm enjoying my country life to the fullest. Both of our kids are grown (not necessarily gone lol) so we can do pretty much anything. Some say I'm in over my head with this chicken thing, but when you've spent a good majority of your life just sitting there watching people do things you want to, it doesn't matter! Honestly, I didn't think I'd enjoy this this much!!

By the way, I blame almost every chicken I have on CricketYang. The first ones I got (silkies) were hers, the chicks I got yesterday she teased me with by putting pics on my facebook page, and almost every other in between she pointed the ad out to me on craigslist LOL

In standard i have French Black Copper Marans, and Polish. I've bought pullets from a gentleman in Columbiaville before. I'm defintitely interested in the Marans. Probably about half a dozen depending on your prices.

Where do you live?!?!? I WANT rain too!!!!

A2- I just ordered our curriculum today. I am way behind on doing that! Hopefully it will be here next week and we can start. It doesn't usually take too long. I ordered from 4 different companies, so as they arrive, we will start!

Now that I think of it, a math book I bid on ebay, is done, guess I need to see if I got it. then curriculum will be set. I have a friend tutoring my daughter this year in math and I just needed the textbook....couldn't find it alone, came with tests and solution manuals. So on ebay I bid $8 and it will cost $12 to ship, and Rachel will have her book

I got some very nice show-quality partridge cochin chicks from a provate breeder near Jackson. I may have some chicks next year and I'm sure she will too. Bullet on this forum got a breeding pair from me so she'll probably have some as well

Oh....SHOOT! I checked the radar, and the clouds have split to the north and south and are moving past us on both sides! My boy is watering his pumpkin patch again.

I'm about an hour and a half northwest of you. Sorry you didn't get any. We all need it. It looks like there is a good sized storm headed your way tomorrow though.

Standard, not bantam? What about hatching eggs?

Quote:
Oh no!!!! The news radar showed more storms heading our way. Hopefully at least one of them will hit your area.
