No its not. I have only lost one chicken to natural causes... Well nature... Heat stroke...
Lost 2 chickens to the dogs.
Almost lost another chicken to an infected gizzard, but she's made a good recovering and is eating like a starved chicken. Didn't even want to go in to the coop tonight, cuz she was still hungry!

You'll get better at it. Chickens are something else. You'll start to notice faster when things are wrong. I didn't get chickens until I had watched my neighbors with their chickens for a year... They'd already had chckens for a few... I didn't get any birds from chick, I bought all my already established, so someone else had the heartache of not having good hatches, losing baby chicks...ect...I am not ready for that yet... But chickens can get sick fast, die fast... some just die, and you never know why, cuz they didn't look sick, just, bang, gone... Some show you theyre sick... But it really is worth it if you can stick it out. Get your birds from a breeder, not a hatchery. You'll have better luck then... I didn't get a single bird from a hatchery. I read to many people having complaints about hatchery standards, so, I got them all local breeders, could see their chickens.

I can't imagine not having chickens now. Now I want a few seramas... But will have to wait. No room in the coop. No money to buid another... Oh well..

I've had good luck with my hens but I do use a veterinarian which is not cost effective but it has saved me untold grief. Whatever caused the death of your first pullet could be causing the illness of your second pullet. Cocci can be seen by a farm vet looking at a poop sample from your hens. You don't have to bring the hen in. Gapeworms also can be detected by having a vet examine a stool sample. Good luck.

Welcome to the MI thread Jenerva! Glad to have you join us, you'll like it here. My chicks had cocci when I got them but dosing with Corid got rid of it. Then I found mites and dusted with Sevin to get rid of them. I lost eight chickens to a fox but have had no other illnesses. Of course, I've only had my flock since last March. I'm sure some of the more experienced poultry keepers will offer their advice.

Looks like the Fowl Fest will be in Birch Run this year, not Frankenmuth. I checked the Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce and they had Grandpa Tiny's Farm Fest in August, but nothing else chicken related for the rest of the year.

Jen, Lady and Babi, Hang in there Jen you may have gotten a poor group, I have had a few deaths also, but not more then 1 a year. You just don't always know what gets them.
Babi I was wondering how you got chicks from Jerry, when I picked up my pullets he told me he had gotten rid of his roo's to give his hens a rest. He does have beautiful birds. The roo I got from him is such beautiful boy and they are very sweet.

Hello Michigan Chicken Friends, As we near the tenth anniversary of one of the darkest days in United States history I would ask that if you know, run into, or have the unfortunate circumstance to need their service, please take a moment to THANK a police officer, firefighter, EMS professional, or military service member. Day in and day out they put their lives on the line to protect or save ours, and the freedoms we enjoy. Thank you to all listed above!

Even though the Twin Towers were in a different state, and even though I had been retired for 10 years, when I witnessed the sacrifice made by the NY FD & PD I couldn't help but feel sad and proud at the same time. I found myself thinking these are my people. I pray God will continue to watch over their families.

He was hatching eggs from another breeder for a lavender(?) project. Only two hatched and they weren't the coloring he was looking for. Lucky me I called him the day they hatched.

No they are not one of his lovely birds. Hopefully they will be just as sweet.
