Looks like the Fowl Fest will be in Birch Run this year, not Frankenmuth. I checked the Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce and they had Grandpa Tiny's Farm Fest in August, but nothing else chicken related for the rest of the year.

Wow! That's surprising. Wonder why Grandpa Tiny isn't doing it anymore?? Oh well, as long as there are chickens, I'll be happy. Hope to see some of you there. There was always a group of BYCers that met for lunch. Everyone is welcome. Hope we'll be able to do it again.

Does anyone on this thread have Silkies ?

Again , I'm in the UP , so if anyone does , could you please advise me on winter care for them ??

I've heard both sides of whether or not they can successfully be kept in Northern Climates.

Thanks.

We just spent a week in the eastern UP at a friend's cabin. Wonderful weather, lovely scenery, and no mosquitoes! Had a skunk and a bear, though. Just to make it fun, as all my chickens were safe downstate!

I have 8 silkies. I've never had a problem with them in the winter. They love to jump through the snow piles and they'll stand there while it snows heavy. They're quite hilarious. As far as cold, I've never seen any of them have a problem.

The silkies I have had have been quite dumb in the winter. They require a little more supervision because they seem to get wetter than a regular chicken. I blame their feathers. Snow sticks to them, and their feather feet and they can develop ice balls.
The silkies I had in the past never roosted- so I made sure I had plenty of straw and pine shavings in their coop- and of course I pamper mine with a heater in the winter. Mainly because I hate the cold so therfore everything must be freezing.

This year, I have different silkies and we havent gone through a winter together. They have been broody all summer, so I expect they are much lighter than if they had foraged and ate like a nonbroody. I will give them extra care this winter. Cooked oatmeal, corn, scratch etc.

I have watched a few tribute videos of September 11. It brings back the feelings I had after that happened, I can't even imagine what the families and the survivors are feeling. They made a beautiful memorial garden there- I like the reflecting pools they showed yesterday.
Different state, but still connected, Sam. They made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

We can forgive but must never forget the sadness and bravery of that day. Our love and prayers go out to the families and friends of those lost on that tragic day,

Same thing was going on at Fowlfest. Guy walking around buying all sorts of chickens and stuffing them in a big bag. Disgusting.

I was PI$$ED when I seen what was happening in NY.
Good thing I wasnt in the White House cause A-bombs would have been flying and my first target would have been Saudia Arabia. Then Afganistan. Then the rest of the Middle East
