I will have chicks the first week of June, but still, currently, the only chickens I have are in freezer camp!

The store was out of Tylan 50. Terramyacin was only in a tiny tube of ointment and unless my eyesight sucks I saw no Baytril, Agrimycin or vet rx. I ended up with injectable penicillin which leads to a whole new research on how much to give......

Let's see.....

The old run really needs new sand in it. We have the sand, just not the manpower to move it right now.
Nova, great job on the coop

Yesterday my wonderful daughter in law came over and cooked dinner for me as I am still recovering. I just love that girl. Today my DH is cleaning poop boards for me, I love him too. I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful family.

I candled the eggs yesterday with DH's help. Out of the 42 I set, I tossed 11 that were clear.

Congratualations to Taprock and Theron for chickens well and thriving! Theron, please get those photos taken soon......with a 4 year old chicken, I don't think you should take any chances of losing her before you have the photos you want! Unnamed! Still hoping your drake makes a full recovery! Pennicillan is a great drug but I would be confused about the dosing also.

So sorry for your loss RaZ. Seems to be the nature of chicken farming. Have you thought of doing a bit of a necropsy - to see if she was egg bound? One of my hens died as she pushed out a soft shell egg. You could check intestines for parasites and lungs for inflammation. Check throat for gapeworms. I think there are some good photos on BYC of chicken internal organs, both normal and diseased. Maybe other folks have ideas of how to examine a dead chicken for information that might help your whole flock.
Thinking of Opa and wishing him the best. Looks like a BEAUTIFUL day in Michigan and I hope everyone has a wonderful day! p.s. Nova -I have to get blood sugar down and cholesterol. I guess dropping about 20 lbs would take care of that. If only it were that easy! Thanks for the prayers!

Sorry to hear about the sick birds but happy to hear of the recoveries. Worrying about a sick animal can be pretty bad.

Then there is the shock of finding a healthy bird dead in the coop. That's what I discovered this morning when I went out. My BO Extra Crispy was dead on the floor with no apparent sign of injury. She died sometime during the night for reasons unknown. She was fine yesterday and last night. She had also been very good at laying those big eggs of 70 grams or bigger.

The other birds are fine from all appearances. They got some leftover macaroni as a treat. Even the 2 Ugo's are getting better about coming when called. Of course a handful of mealworms helps with that training.

Well I better get busy cleaning up the rest of the house for the SuperBowl party.

Extra Crispy???? LOL!!!!!
Now that laughing is out of the way, I can say I am sorry about your loss. I've heard that heart attacks can take apparently healthy birds.
Have a good SB party

Egg bound was my first thought because she lays those big ole eggs. But she was also the largest of the flock. I also thought about a necropsy. Just didn't think of doing it myself. And I do have that poultry book...
Also might have been a heart attack...

yes, i like the health store stuff! Worked better than the stuff they called medicine, without the side effects! Last year they even added some of those to the list that dr's can prescribe, even for medicaid! So it seems that they really can be effective. These days i am doing great, and just have to watch what i eat. I may never know what brought it on, but i am glad that it went away. I have a heart for those in the midst of it all, because when you are hurting it is hard to feel anything else. Perspective really is everything. I am so glad that dr's are taking this seriously nowadays.
