I saw that and was interested because it is taught by one of the vets I have talked to on the phone several times, if only it was farther north.

Welcome Kimmie!

Ok I am going to give in and order some eggs next week.

I really wanted to find some bantam WCB Polish but they seem rare this time of the year. I guess it gives me an excuse to hatch more later when I find the eggs.

I have a cochin right now who is trying to be broody. She spends all her time in the nest boxes and sleeps in there also. I toss her out of the nest box several times during the day so she is getting food and water. I take all the eggs she has tucked under her - she changes boxes during the day and climbs in on everyone's eggs. I don't really have a cage or way to break her right now, is this going to hurt her in any way?

Hi Kimmie :D

Taprock as long as she is not loosing weight she should be ok, but keep an eye on her. If she starts getting thin it may be a problem for her if she does get eggs to hatch, as she would already not be in top condition for the 21 day marathon of brooding.

Anyone want their carpets cleaned while I still have the carpet shampooer out? I guess I got into a cleaning kick today for no reason. Cleaned the house very well (except for dusting, I hate dusting!). The carpets needed it, that was some icky water that the machine was pulling out of the carpeting! Regular vacuuming can only do so much

ME! ME! ME! Please! I wish I didn't have carpet, but I do and it so needs to be cleaned right now. I'm going to rent a Rug Doctor and do it in a week or so. Wish you were closer Stacy!

My goodness! I gave a squeal of delight when I saw these little fuzzies!

Welcome Raspberry, you'll love it here. Lots of great folks to discuss chickens with! Now I'm really hungry for a good salad.

I insisted that my sons all learn how to cook, sew, clean, wash & iron. I wanted them to never feel they needed to have someone in their lives for that reason. It's much better to be with someone because you want to be with them instead of because you need a house keeper.

Opa, you are so wise and you did a wonderful favor for some lucky ladies.

Hi I live in the middle of Michigan "Gateway to the North" or so they say, actually I live near Harrison 1/2 off the road on a private trail. I don't have any chickens yet but will this spring. I can't wait, I always wanted some.

Kimmie

Welcome kimmie!! We're always so glad to have new members join us! What breed of chickens are you thinking of getting?

Daron, the feeding station portion of your feeder isn't much different than is on my Kuhl range feeders. I doubt that you intend to have chicks in the run those feeders are placed so chicks getting caught isn't a issue. My only question is did you put a cone in the bottom so the feeder empties completely.
Thanks for bringing that up, I was trying to think how to do that. I will make one tomorrow and post it here to get your opinion of it. I do not have to work tomorrow! :weee I will finally sleep in! :woot

when my son wanted to learn how to sew my DH had a fit "thats not boy stuff" I taught him any way hi can at least still sew enough to get by, and he is a good cook, another thing we did often when the kids were young, They also had to clean and do laundry, A good thing too cause my sons wife has a high power job and many hobbies and house work is not very high on her list.

But no one has time to do a lot of cleaning now days with both parents working but its good enough, and they all survive,
I can cook well, and just used a sewing machine to sew a patch on my jeans a few weeks ago. :D
And the Frankenfoods get even worse... I received this e-mail today.

The FDA is on the brink of approving genetically engineered salmon for human consumption. This would be the first genetically engineered animal on supermarket shelves in the United States.
The salmon is engineered to produce growth hormones year-round that cause the fish to grow at twice the normal rate. The government already requires labels to tell us if fish is wild-caught or farm-raised—don't we also have a right to know if our salmon is genetically engineered? Without labels, we'll never know.
More than forty countries, including Russia and China, already require labels on genetically engineered foods. As Americans, we firmly believe that we deserve the same right to know what we are eating.
That's why I created a petition to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on SignOn.org, which says:
Commissioner Hamburg, we urge the FDA to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. We have a right to know about the food we eat and what we feed our families, but under current FDA regulations, we don't have that ability when it comes to genetically engineered foods.
Polls show that more than 90% of Americans support mandatory labeling. Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare. Please listen to the American public and mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods.

I signed it, and I hate anything that is GMO!
Daron - The feeder looks great!

Opa - You did your sons a service. My poor husband had to learn after we got together because his mother never taught him a thing. It was a steep learning curve, but he does well now.
Thank you. :)

Raspberry & Kimmie, welcome to the Michigan thread. With the exception of this grumpy old rooster, all the folks on this thread are extremely friendly and helpful. I know you will enjoy yourselves here. Be sure to click on the Chickenstock link in my signature line. It it the gateway to all the pertinent information about what has become a wonderful gathering of chicken aficionados. Lots of nice people who won't look at you funny when you start talking poultry. Also a excellent place to set and get a wide variety of birds.

The only real problem I've had with the editor while posting is the inability to get the text size to stay on the size I've selected and the occasional post that decides to vanish into cyber space just before I am ready to post. Plus for some strange reason it only does this on a post of considerable length in which I have just typed something profound.

I've noticed quite a few folks are very pleased with ability to change text color and use it frequently. I have found that some colors are very difficult for my old eyes to discern.
