Daylight by 5:15 am today was nice to get up and sit for a while on the deck, till my big bear showed up anyway. At least I was looking his way when he came into site so I could leave without my heart in my throat.

I got some ?'s for you predator experts. I hope I am safe asking them here LOL. Last week I found a hole dug in the ground big hole not small, with a mound of dirt in front of the hole, the size that a mid size dog could get in, I though oh no fox. Next day about 30 feet from the hole I see another hole, exit hole, I though oh no it really is a fox.

So I walk past this den everyday I have 5 1/2 acres and walk the road that was built around the property by my brother in law. This den is also less than 300 yards from my back yard and the chickens. So yesterday I notice that by the exit hole there is poop. I am sure it is a good size fox as it is the size of medium size dog's poop and is really black and has some seeds (from prey I assume, but ya all know about assume right). I hadn't looked to close the last few days since I found the second hole and when I looked yesterday there was about 4 other piles of poop that had crumbled (like when ya feed raw diet to your dog).

So do ya think fox like me, someone said it could be coon but I never heard of them making a den in the ground, didn't think they dug like that.

Also what size hav a heart do I need to buy now and what kind of gun do I need to elimate my problem (I don't believe in relocating my problem to someone else's back yard). Where would I get the best deal on a gun. I have to contact the gun range for lessons. Oh and with the trap, I am thinking I would need to tie it down so they can't tip it and I should put canned cat food under the trap so that they have to work for it, or in the trap, I want that trap to trip for sure. Don't want anything to escape. Also can I eleminate a fox or do I have to contact the DNR about some kind of permit, our DNR are not the sharpest crayon in the box up here.

Any help/suggestions would be so welcomed. I hate going to the pred and pest section as it seems that a few of them can shut a thread down in a heart beat and I don't want the hassle today as even with my electric fence I did not sleep very well last night, in fact I was up at 5 because something yelped for about 5 min after hitting that fence. I would snap I think if someone said poor fox you are moving into his territory, sorry been here almost 6 year and he/she/it turned up 6 days ago, and if it isn't helping me pay the rent it is out of here.

Thanks and good morning it is a really nice day up here. Have a great day ya all.

GOOD MORNING MICHIGANDERS!!! The sun is shining in Sodus right now! Though not for long, I believe... There are rainclouds in the sky that keep threatening to block out those beautiful rays. The forecast calls for rain non-stop all week... ...again.

Still looking for those marans... sigh... Didn't think it would be so hard.

The traps I use all around for coon or fox are about 13-14" square by about 3' long. I'd be more inclined to lay something heavy over it like a limb or something, rather than tie it down because it seems like the less scent you leave the quicker your trap fills. To bait it, I'd use something that your dog would find tasty and set it by the den.. As far as guns go.... Most pests around here are dispatched with a .22 rifle. Inexpensive ammo, little recoil, small sounds. My everyday sidearm though is a .38, but then again, I hardly go around without it when I am playing in the yard.

Bear? Wow, I just looked up where Gladstone is, you are almost over by Green Bay!!!!! I think my sidearm up there would be an elephant gun

Hillbilly, sorry, no extra pullets right now or chicks, though I have a few eggs under a broody and I am going to hatch some out for chickenstock. I can do eggs though!

I was wondering if anyone has ever had an experience like this with their chickens. My frizzle has been (I believe) molting for a while now. Poor girl is also the roosters favorite. So, I purchased a couple of saddles for her and she keeps them on for a day and a half before I find them in misc places around the coop. I've attached a couple pictures of her. She just looks really pitiful. Unfortunately you can't really see the top of her back, it's pretty bare, and her neck is pretty much bald. AND now her poor wings are almost 100% bare of feathers. She's got sticks and not wings!!!! I wonder if anyone else had a molt like this????
