nice to see a post from Myrna!

the most beautiful snow is falling here this morning! soft and slow. like a Christmas globe. just lovely.

not pretty enough to make me WANT to go out to do chores. my kids are off school today and are going to help me scoop the coops! yeah!

gotta go feed the chicks in the brooders, they are going crazy in there...there is flying and flapping. easiest way to recognize the food is running low.

enjoy the lovely winter all!

Hi All!

For me it is too cold too soon!

I have to tell you about the surprise I am doing for my Mom's Christmas present.

We are taking her to see the musical Grease at the Wharton Center tomorrow, Saturday.

I called her on Tuesday and asked what she is doing on Saturday and it was nothing. So I told her I would pick her up in the late afternoon, I have to confirm time today.
I also called her mom, grandma, the same day and left a message that I needed to talk to her.
So my mom thinks that it has something to do with my kids since I called grandma the same day. (Mom and Grandma talked the same day as my calls)
So my sister, one sister in law, grandma, mom, and I are all going to dinner then to see Grease. My mom is going to be so shocked! She hates surprises too so I think it is even better that she has it in her head what it is going to be and she is way off!

Have a great weekend and we will talk to you all soon,
Sarah

I've been kinda shy to post in this thread. It's so massive and I honestly tend to get overwhelmed when threads get huge like this. But, I thought I'd finally say hello to my fellow Michiganders.

So, hello from west Michigan! We're somewhere in between Muskegon and Grand Rapids.

Hey Everyone!
DD & I are thinking about getting a bunny or two. DD is thinking 4-H for '09. We were thinking Flemish, because they seem more like a barn animal and less like a rodent to keep in a little cage on the desk. Do any of you have experience with particular breeds? Any advice? Should we wait for Spring and get them set up in a hutch outside or keep babies in the basement for Winter?
I was wondering if anyone on BYC knows of a reputable Michigan breeder.

No one should ever be reluctant to post on this thread. I've gotten wonderful advice from people that I have gotten to know and many more I hope to meet. No one here bites. At least I know that I don't. I've gotten so old and harmless I couldn't bite if I wanted to. I'll be looking forward to reading your future posts.

Welcome newcomers!

About the rabbits. We bought a baby bunny from a local 4-H breeder several years ago. She had 2 that were good choices. We went with the younger one. Well she hadn't been handled as much as the older one. I wish I would of choosen the older one.

The younger one bit the kids and got nervous and would kick and scratch the kids. She was wrapped in a towel quite a bit of the time so the kids could pet her. So the kids called her Cuddles the biting bunny!

I ended up donating her to a 4-H club that was big into rabbits. I don't know if she ever made it to the fair or not.

After we got Cuddles I found out it takes 20 minutes or so a day of handling a rabbit to get them to be calm like the ones at the fair. I also found out that rabbits aren't the best pet for young children. The bunny didn't like yelling and screaming from the little ones!

So we switched and bought some bantam chickens for the girls to love on and take to the fair. They have been a great thing for our family. It is much easier for the little ones to carry around a bantam then a large fowl....some should of been recorded and sent to America's funniest home videos.

Good luck on your venture. I don't know where you are located, but I think that the 4-H leader still breeds rabbits. We are in Fowlerville, MI

Sarah

PS> My mom thought I was taking her to the community theatre in Howell tonight... so now she is really wondering where I am going to take her! I cannot wait, we are going out to dinner then to see Grease!

I will have some New Zealand Blacks in spring. Let me know if you are interested. You can keep them outside as long as you protect them from rain/snow and wind. definately keep them outside in summer and make sure they do not overheat. They do better in cold weather than hot.

Sarah did your mother enjoy the show? I don't know who is responsible for this weather but man is that wind making it feel colder than my old bones can take. As am typing this I'm watching my sick SLW eating. I just wish she wouldn't squack quite so much. I wish I had been able to save the Maran. I've got to head out to my shop and start butchering two deer that I took over the weekend. I had thought about going hunting today but with this wind I think that butchering the two I've got is a better idea. I've got to take my mother to the airport tomorrow so she can go visit my oldest and youngest sons for Xmas. They live in sw Missouri about 40 miles west of Branson. She's really looking forward to going and come to think of it I am too. I love my mother but the break will be nice.

Two hours of shoveling and I finally got dug out. David came and plowed the lower drive so I guess that I'm all set until Friday. Now I've got to go out and fill the waterers. Don't you just love winter?
