I just beat a oppossum off the porch with broom. Wish the hubby was home -- he's at bible study. He would shoot it for me. Even though I don't like them, I still hate to be mean! He quickly ran off, I am sure he will be back for more cat food.

I had a very young possum in my chicken house last night. I went out to lock them up, and my chickens were all outside the door clucking up a storm. Apparently Roxi the BCM had chased the thing behind inner door. It was trapped, and she was ANGRY. She's a brute.

Doug chased it back outside and Roxi stood her ground on the path. She stood there guarding the path after it left, until I had to finally convince her to go in, and everyone was safe.

That dumb possum probably though... oh chickens. They're nothing. WRONG! They had that thing surrounded!

I sure do like the way that the snow is leaving us. I'm hoping that it continues leaving slow, less chance of flooding. Currently I still have about 6-8" of snow and the only bare ground is the path to the chickens. I briefly considered putting away the snow blower but decided that doing so might guarantee us having a late March blizzard.

Good Morning!

So glad for the warm weather, but boy does it get cold at night!

Washed the van last night on my way home. So I am planning on staying home today so it doesn't get all muddy on our lovely pot-holed, muddy dirt road

Have a great day!

Thanks Sam - Good information - We must have a bunch molting right now then....out of 27 hens we only getting about a dozen or so eggs and there are feathers everywhere - inside and outside of the coop. And this would be about 18 months since we got the first dozen so I'd say most of our girls are late molters.

Sad news: we had to put one of our dogs down yesterday. He had 2 seizures in early January...and had been fine until yesterday when he had about a dozen seizures back to back. The vet game him valium to stop the seizures, but was only successful for a very short period of time. We picked him up last night around 6:30 to bring him home and see how he'd do for a day or so, but we hadn't anymore started down US27 when he had another seizure. Made the difficult decision to take him back and send him to doggie heaven. Hershey was a black lab/shephard mix and we'd probably had him about 12 years or so - suspect he was about 14 - had been a rescue dog. His gal pal, Savannah keeps going to the door and crying. She spent some time with him here in the house before we moved him outside. We have him wrapped in a blanket on the deck...and she's been out to spend some time with him...each time a little less, so I hope she's recovering somewhat. hubby is going to see if he can make any headway in the ground today.
Enjoy the sun everyone - Nancy

So sorry to hear about your dog, Nancy. My 15 yr old Sheltie died last year and it was so hard. I feel for you! Sun is out, so that means it's gonna be a good day! I'm hoping to clean out the chicken coop today. Have a good one.....

Well, hubby said, "Why didn't you shoot the oppossum?" Umm because I've only shot his handguns like twice and hated it. I've never shot a rifle or shotgun. No too comfy around them! I'll just stick with my broom and if one is in the coop then it will get the shovel -- I always keep on in there just in case. Oh, and I have a big piece of rebar in there. So I figure I'm covered if there's any critters in the coop. Plus the hubby is usually home in the evening to dispatch any critters.

Opa... We still have a ton of snow too. The paths we made are starting to clear, but everywhere else is covered. Don't put the snowblower away yet!

Hustonn... So sorry about your dog.

We lost our 6 year old german shepherd suddenly last april. We had him cremated by a wonderful place, and the vets who treated him have a customer for life. We still miss him very much. He was a very special dog. Our Lurcher Riley was depressed and wouldn't leave his crate for a couple months. Our house was like tomb. We later talked to our breeder, and we now have Sampson's neice. Riley's happy to have a playmate again, and it's fun to have a goofy puppy around again.

Nancy~ I am so sorry for your loss, even when you not its coming.
I had to put our two German imported shepherds down this winter as well, the female had cancer and the males hips kept going out. They were a year apart in age and very bonded, so I thought it best they go together. The frozen ground was an issue even with owning a backhoe, I paid the extra money to cremate them, but it was not cheap.

The standard cochins are sold folks, going to Bay City Area.

Heading to the barn to take pics of those snotty teenage silkies for the website.

Yeah, I couldn't have shot our visiter if I tried. He was hiding behind the inner door terrified. I would have hit a chicken. The two roosters scared the daylights out of him, and it was very young. It couldn't run back out because Roxi and one of our HUGE roosters had the path out blocked. It was trapped behind the inner door and the wall. He comes back again, it's getting the shovel. I doubt it will be back though. It will probably get eaten by the larger night creatures we have around here, or hit by a speeding car like the rest do. Or, Our dog Brody will get it. He likes Possum.
