Maybe try to train the big dope dog since you can't train the neighbors. If I were training my dog to not bark I would have small liver treats or any smallish treat, they need to gulp the treat right as soon as they do what you want them to. Then go over to where he is and with a pop can with some pennies in it. Shake the can to startle and get his attention, as soon as he is quiet say one word only one like QUIET. As soon as he is not barking give him the treat through the fence. Do that several times over several days. Then for a while give a treat every time you go outside. Get them from the dollar store so it wont cost you a fortune, after all it isn't your dog. Maybe that will help?

I knew you were in the area somewhere opa but with no way to get to the forums to see if you were around, and I don't know your address or phone number.

besides, bev would have had ME out in the coop if I were to stop and visit without her.

the scene would be something like this...

honey I visited opa today!

Hey, you work for a vet! Hmmm... a few suggestions come to mind!

For peace of mind you could do the treat thing. Get a few of those sterilized bones and stuff it with peanut butter, he would at least be busy. And if some ACE should happen to fall in the peanut butter, he could be busy for a good long while!

we used a handheld "bark control" unit to help reduce the barking of our dog. it emits a loud tone when you push the button. every time he barked when we didnt want him to I would yell 'no' when pushing the button. after a couple days he barked alot less. of course now that we have birds in the house (that the noise drives nuts) I cant use it for reinforcement. I have tried using a small spray bottle of water and spray him when he doesnt stop barking on command and that works reasonable well.

my guess though is that after some amount of time your neighbor dog should just stop on his own, or mostly anyway. once he recognizes the chickens as a 'natural' part of the surroundings and not a threat or something to be concerned about or so warn the 'pack' about. hoq long has he been doign it? I cant remember any of the dogs around as I was growing up barking non-stop like that over the chickens, they all eventually just accepted them as 'normal' and mostly ignored them.

Just came in from loading fire wood on Hope's step dad's trailer. Wasn't planning on getting such an early start working outside today but it's good to get that wood out of here. He's got a big 8'x16' flatbed trailer with 12" sides so he can haul quite alot of wood at one time. Probably one more load and the only thing left will be all the branches that I need to chip up. Rather than carrying the saws, gas, oil, mauls, and splitting wedges I just loaded it all in my truck and then left the truck near the fallen tree. This morning John was backing his trailer in close to the tree and hit one of my chicken coops knocking it off its legs. Since he was backing between my truck and the coop I guess I'm glad that it is the coop that got hit and not my truck. Still I didn't need the extra work of repairing it. The coop is a small divided gambrel roofed barn with two cages attached to it. I have 2 trios of bantams in it and I bet they just about went into cardiac arrest when the coop got hit and knocked off its legs.

you happen to have any pic's of the way you've divided it? our coop sounds pretty similiar and I'm thinking I'm going to have to divide it at least 3 ways to keep some birds seperate, since we dont have enough room to let them all roam and avoid each other, and since they are of varying ages it's looking like they are not all going to get along if we putthem all together. (plus we have too many roo's for the hens)

Opa: Yikes, the poor little chickens, and now poor you for having to fix the coop.

M2EMal: Check out this to relieve the barking. http://www.petco.com/product/104027/PetSafe-Outdoor-Bark-Control.aspx I would put the thing right above your fence, overlooking the neighbor's yard. Maybe you'll hear ROOOOOf, then silence.

Enjoy the sunshine everyone. I heard it's supposed to be back up into the mid 60's tomorrow, of course when many of us will be stuck inside work all day.

Mom2emall.... I had a similar problem when I lived in Texas. Had a privacy fence all around our yard. Neighbor had a rotti that would bark and bark. Use to yell at her to shut up but it never worked. Finally, I went to the fence and started talking to her softly and threw treats over the fence. She couldn't see me, so she would just bark at any noise. Went over and asked the neighbor if I could "meet" her dog. After we made friends, she never would bark at me again. When I came into the yard, I would just start talking to her and she would be fine.
Great day out! Could be less wind, but sure lots better than snow!!

Drove to Davison this afternoon to Krisrose's, talk about have a big turkey. One of the biggest hens I've seen. Then went a couple of door down to Chickflick's to see her spoil birds. They both have nice set ups for their birds and it was nice to see how others keep their birds.

As soon as I got home I put a boneless Cajun seasoned chicken stuffed with rice and crawfish in the oven. It won't be done until 630 but my stomach is already starting to feel like my throats been cut. It sure is going to be some good eats.

Sad enough this is his second summer here next door- he never stops, he runs the fence and barks until he is hoarse. It is not just my chickens, it is us, my dogs, my kids- anything. He never stops. Until they take him in the house- and then he is so wild in their house, they put him back outside.

Connie, ace has found its way into peanut butter over the fence...

conveniently when I have a ton of backyard work to do out there. He knows who we are, and I have tried being his buddy through the fence...I have given him great big beef basted bones from the feed store to keep him quiet, but he saves them for when we go in or dark or something because he just keeps on barking and running the fence. I want to buy those bark-activated sound emitters but I dont think my dogs would appreciate it. Dunno if the chickens can hear them or not, but I do have a couple loud hens that need to have those citronella spray collars or shock collars on them, too..

I got TONS of yard work done today. In fact, the yard clean up IS done. Time to seed, till and plant but otherwise done done done...
wee.gif

It looks clean and neat, and I cleaned out my flower beds and mended the fences around them and fixed the hardware cloth that covers the split-rail to keep the chicken yard seperated from the backyard. My hands are cut up but now I can work on duck projects- going to make an area for them and some type of pond/swimming hole for them.

I hope everyone had a wonderful day!
