LOVE that post. We certainly NEED more female chickens (just not the duck thing now woohoo) and Aric makes FANTASTIC pies, but with gas at over $3 a gallon, we just couldn't make it to Midland. That's a creative post though!

SO, like I said, our need for more female ducks has been filled. We have managed to pick up 8 ducks in 24 hours. 5 thanks to Vicki and the other 3 in trade for the 5 Belgian Quails I've been trying to find homes for. Ironically which also came from Vicki.

Yesterday Vicki msg'd me asking if I wanted to take in 6 ducks she and her friend had. They had too many and one was a special needs duck. As soon as i got there and saw this little lady, I HAD to have her!! They ended up keeping one of the Pekins, so I got to take 2 Pekin females, a pair of gorgeous Mallards and a female Runner that is identical to the male one I got not long ago from Kim. But, before we picked them up we had talked to a lady about some ducks she was wanting to trade for the BQ. We get there and I picked out 3 Cayugas. We managed to mention we needed young hens too and she gave us a spring BR hen!!! OH WOW did we luck out the last couple of days.

However, this has led to the need to expand the duck run. It was perfect for 11 ducks, but now we have 19! Fortunately the barn is plenty big enough!!

So, here's my special needs baby. She is now the love of my life. I love all my ducks beyond measure, but this one tugs at my heart!!

Still need to come up with a special name. She's quiet and sweet. The other new ones are all nice too, but having many disabilities myself, this one and I have some things in common!

My only concern is with this winter. I don't want her beak to get chapped or tongue freeze.

I have all the pics on my facebook. I'll try to get some of them set up to post here soon...unless you want to find me there!

I would make a video but I'm afraid that my excelerated egg extraction technique might offend those not of Harlan Sanders ilk.

Just wondering about the special needs duck.................went she makes noise does it come out as "Mack, Mack"? Like the dog with a harelip that goes "Mark, Mark".

She doesn't have much of an upper beak.....you try using the M with no upper lip!

She doesn't make much noise at all. Probably because all the others are busy making noise!

Celia -- I was scanning posts just now when my oldest daughter walked by she recognized the Brahma pullets. She said "Awww, their house is so pretty!"

Grasp hen with right hand around neck close to head. Place left hand below right, then right below left without releasing pressure. Continue alternating hands until you reach tail. Eggs should pop out.

Tomorrow is the 35 anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Take a few moments to be thankful for the 35 years that you have had and remember the crew

Opa....your method didn't work so I just picked them up by the neck and spun around really fast hoping that the gravitational pull would make eggs fly out...fyi...that doesn't work either

(totally kidding...but tempting to try! LOL)

hahaha, Actually, this was my post! A family came last night around 7:30 bearing TWO apple pies too! They were delicious and firm, none of that half pie half soup stuff that I usually make. mmm!!!

Bartering is still alive and well

And just to make everyone jealous...

Aww, it's neat to see the outcome of that ad. I won't lie when I first read it I was a little wary. "Meet me at my house after dark ... and bring a pie." doesn't exactly scream "legitimate and definitely not a creeper!" to me.

That's the problem, there are really nice people out there who truly will barter like that -- chickens for pies, a little garden help for free bulbs, etc -- but there is always the very real risk that the ad you pick happens to be the one in 10,000 where the person isn't legitimate.

Anyway, it's another nice day out there. Foggy but nice. This week's hatch is going well. 5 wet chicks, 1 zip and 7 pips at last check. The broody is still alive as of first light this morning. I couldn't ask for much more. I hope everyone is well.
