Thanks for the quick reply. Hmmmm, I figured it was a characteristic of Frizzles. Strange. Now , at 5 weeks the other chicks are feathered out but not the plain Frizzles. They look like they have mange! Happened last year too but they eventually fill out just fine. OK, so maybe it's just MY Frizzles!

Julie, just read your post. Thanks, that's great to know. I'll bet that's what happened here. They are mixed chicks so I don't know who bred with who. But yes, it looks like the feathers just break off. I sold my beautiful two frizzled roos so that won't be an issue next year.

totorider, are they sure it's food grade? I checked all over the darn state last year looking for it and I had a long conversation with those folks. Not sure if I'm remembering correctly but it seems like they did not know what it was and then looked it up for me and could only get pool grade. If they had it there I would have gladly purchased it from them as it is only 40 min. from my house. Perhaps after our conversation they decided to order some. I ended up buying it on line. I think I called every feed store within a 200 mile radius of Clarkston and came up empty handed. I asked each place I called to consider ordering it as many of us Michiganders are looking for it.

Oxford Farm and Garden told me over the phone that they had it so I made the trek over there only to find it was pool grade, even after I asked. No one understands what the diff is.

I called the Miller's Feed in Spruce (I know that is too far North for you but might as well list it for the others who might need it).

They can get it in for $17.70 a 50# bag so I was told.....

This is a lady in Standish who sells food grade de. I have to get it from her as there is no one I know of close to me. But she might be closer to you. Hope that helps, Gail

I asked both places twice and they both said that it was food grade. I tend to believe the girl at Livingston Seed more than the guy at Highland Feed, although when I asked twice he said it was food grade.

I wonder if we had enough people that were close enough to say... Brighton, if we could order 10(or however many people we can get) bags of 50# food grade de at a better price? I will try to figure out the economies of scale of getting a bunch. Let me know if anyone is interested and close enough.

Does anyone live in the Marquette MI area? Way up North? I don't have chickens but am getting two sebastopol geese next week. I haven't been a member of Back Yard Chickens long but I like it and everyone seems so helpful. Maybe someday I'll get chickens but right now its just geese. Well, between the guy I'm dating and myself we have three dogs, a turtle, an albino packman frog, and he wants to get quail. So just the geese (okay and soon the quail oh ya and the phesants he wants) will be it for now. I saw so many people talking about where they lived in lower Michigan that I was just wondering if any one on here lived up my way? (I do admit I didn't read every single post on this topic so people may have already been talking about this area. Sorry if you have...) I hope you all have a great rest of the day!!
