If you have extra hens you need to rehome, let me know. I'm hoping someone goes broody this spring and I can let her hatch a few more of the green variety.
This is my first attempt and I'm hoping to do it all "au natural", letting the hen do all the work. You'll prob see me here asking 100 questions!

I'd like some plain ol' white egg layers if anyone needs to give some away. I have one kid who won't eat "fertilized" eggs. I told her I got the rooster fixed, but I don't know how long that one will last. it hasn't occurred to her that we have 4 roos...
anyway, I can keep the white eggs in a separate carton and she can think they are from the store. (am I a bad parent for lying to my kid?)

I got my dog kennel delivered and set up and the ducks in it and they are LOVING it, especially with exposed grass, and snow melting on the deck down on the concrete of the patio beneath it and having so much FUN playing in the puddles. All I have to do now is bring the dog igloo down for another shelter then what I made yesterday and my bails of straw, and buy a clear plastic tarp/sheeting to put on one side to keep snow/wind from coming in, even though it isn't that bad at all as it is, just extra protection. However I will probably have to figure something out so no preditors will climb up and into the kennel, that hasn't happened yet considering we have a Great Dane on our premises and preditors can smell a preditor themselves on the land/near the house. But I will take a picture as soon as I'm completely done. Oh that massage is going to feel good tomorrow after today butt kicking around the house with it almost being 50 out!

I don't know that you're a "bad parent" but your actions don't make sense to me. I'd just tell her the eggs you have are the eggs from your chickens and if she doesn't like it, she doesn't have to eat them, but you won't be preparing anything separate and special for her based on unfounded and irrational fears so if eggs are what's for dinner she either eats, or doesn't. Her choice.

Personally, I wouldn't pretend to have store bought eggs for her because then you're feeding her unfounded and irrational fears and directly contributing to the food issues America faces today. People are incredibly disconnected from where their food comes from and it presents a host of issues. By pretending to get her store bought eggs you're basically confirming her idea that unfertilized, large farm produced eggs are superior to backyard, fertilized eggs.

Instead, why not sit her down and talk to her about WHY she doesn't want to eat fertilized eggs and address those issues with her until you come to a resolution. Even very young children can be reasoned with and the earlier you start the better they are able to process the world as they grow up. They become better people when they can think both critically and independently and issues in the home like these are no better place to start instilling that foundation.

Mother Earth News has a study on their website done on free-range, fertilized eggs vs "factory" farmed eggs and it lays out in no uncertain terms that the free-range, fertilized eggs are superior nutritionally. You may use that to help her understand the differences. Fertilization of the eggs probably had little to do with it, more so he free-ranging, but the comparison still exists.

Thank goodness my lab doesn't have windows so I don't know what I'm missing for the most part. Rolled down my van windows and left them like that all day so that it can air out that been-sealed-up-all-winter-so-it-smells-like-wet-socks smell!

Last year I had my 2 ducks under our trampoline, well it worked for us but not for them when kids would come over and jump on it, and now that we have gone from 2 to 11, and the babies are no longer babies but 4 1/2mths old and Michigan is on a warm up this week, I thought it was a good time to kick the kids out of the indoor nest and outside with mom/dad. So I had 2 large dog kennels delivered today, and I by myself kicked butt today and got them situated, all week they were on our deck, today and here on forward they will be here. I forgot to take a picture of their other shelter/nesting area that is close against the house, I also have 4 bails of straw as a wind breaker.

Believe me, I have already tried alot of this. Ever try to reason with a 13 yr old girl? I have better luck with the chickens!

If she lived with me 24/7 I would take a harder stance, but I only see her twice a month and some long weeks in the summer.
She had to disect an egg in science class and would not eat the eggs after that. She's not opposed to "fresh" eggs, just "fertilized" ones.
I think for right now, I'm sticking with the dont ask dont tell policy and save the arguments for things like using good manners, being respectful, and minding her tone of voice.
gotta pick my battles, ya know?

Is it just me...or in the bottom pictures did one of your ducks shape-shift into a cat?

What a beautiful day this has been -- and still is -- I was able to open the windows for a few hours and air the house out. The geese have spent all day fighting with one another (just three ganders in particular) and grazing on the patch of now bare lawn on the east side of the house -- I smell a nice reduction in feed expenses coming up!!!

Well, I'm headed outside for the evening chores and to enjoy the rest of this weather. Hope you all are well and enjoying it as well.
