I got REAL lucky today!! after the sun came out I let the 4 little chicks out of the coop and into the run. Stood and kept an eye on them for a while, very humid out today (whew), all of a sudden I saw one of the smallest red ones, still pretty tiny at 5 weeks and 2 days old, jump thru the 2x4 mesh fencing. YIKES!! Luckily Big ol' Mousse didn't see it happen and I opened the gate and walked in, picked up the little chickie and dropped her over the fence. She fluttered down to the rest of them safe and sound, for now. I put them back in the tractor where they'll have to stay for another couple weeks I guess till they're big enough to not get thru the 2x4.

And yes, I DO NEED to buy stuff. There's several chickens we need because I've slowly been re-homing some we picked up last year. When we started this chicken thing last Spring, we picked up this or that. But now I want sets instead of one of this and 3 of that.

My BCM's are the French variety, but unfortunately we won't be able to bring any to chickenstock. We hope to have some for sale in aug/september though.

I have three buff orps that are almost 13 weeks old... and I think they may be roos. I was so sure they were hens! Does anyone else have these birds? They have never offered up a crow, their combs and wattles are about the same size as my Isa hens, and they are pink, not red. But, looking at them today, they are growing long tail feathers, and their feathers appear iridescent. I'm also suspicious about the shiny feathers that are developing where saddle feathers would be on roosters. They have big fluffy butts though

They are such massive birds, and I've never had them before. I don't really know what to expect. I'm surprised I've never heard them make a peep though. I'll try getting a good picture today and see what everyone thinks... If they are cocks, my chicken numbers are getting all skewed. Too bad I can't go to Chickenstock to replenish my hen population!

I have 2 - 12 week old buff orps and they are starting to get tail feather right now, too. There combs are small and pink and have been the same size for weeks. I'm sure they are girls, no pointy saddle feathers, no waddles to speak of, they all act girly. I'll try and get a good shot of them so we can compare.​
