I just read a post about freezing baby chicks that need to be culled. I was totally horrified! This guy thinks that hypothermia isn't painful... Just some people think drowning isn't painful... I don't know, maybe I am just to sensitive. I wish I hadn't read the post. I always figured if I ever had to cull a chick, I'd just snap its neck. I totally hated when I had to put my Rosie down, Carl did it in the fastest least painful way. How would freezing be painless? It might be quick, but it isn't when you consider that the chick is going to suffer for a few minutes before expiring. Maybe its cuz I am a mom, and I hate the thought of a baby anything suffering before the end. Sheesh. I think I need a pill or a reboot on my sensitivity chip.

I tarped the roof on the coop for now. To much rain coming to even try to get to the bottom of the leak. I totally had to clean the coop out. I took the wet out from the one side, and let it dry up a bit, then threw the pine from the other side over it, scrubbed it around a bit and then pulled that out too, and then had to lose one shelf, was too wet to put back in... Mr. Fluffers wasn't that happy about it, It was his THRONE. LOL. Maybe can go back in tomorrow after it finishes drying. Looks as though I might have to bleach the inside wall on that side. I do not have insulation, so, dont have to worry about replacing that, but green mildew/mold looks to have started on the outside... My fault, haven't had a chance to paint it. I wanted to over labor day weekend, but... Well, now I get to reap the rewards.. BOOHOO.

Mr. Fluffers got into it with the neighbors Americana(?) Roo... I am proud to say, Mr. Fluffers kicked butt. LOL. He'd lay down flat on the ground and everytime the americana roo came at him, he'd jump strait up and nail him in the chest, and then lay right back down. I was giggling, cuz My drag queen rooster is a smart little guy... Waited for the attack... kinda like "keep your eye on the ball". I am just glad it wasn't Bad Bob... Bad Bob is one MEAN rooster. Older than Mr. Fluffers...

I also figured out, I have been blaming the wrong dog. Its not Rotten Ruby after all who is the chicken killer... Its Argus. Ruby kept figuring out how to escape, and not once did she go after any of the chickens, neither mine nor Carls... Argus however sees them thru the fence, his hackles get raised, and if he was smarter, I am sure he'd be out of the fencing too... Sorry Ruby.

Well, hope everyone is staying dry. Supposed to rain more... YUCK! But, atleast it washes away the chicken poop.

You don't need a sensitivity reboot, because it is cruel. I see you posted on the same thread. Hard to believe people can think that is an acceptable way to cull (same with drowning, CO2 (the panic response from hypercapnic hypoxia is both terrifying and painful, animals don't 'go to sleep' nicely), and some other methods), but oh well. It sucks that the messier ways are the most humane. Cervical dislocation is pretty humane in the grand scheme of things, but it is very 'hands on'.

that looks like a BIG bird, alot on the legs. I prefer dark meat.
I don't really know about my CHante. It was a bit traumatic, because when the gal motioned me up to bring my truck, I stood outside writing my check and happened to look in the processing room. I saw the NEXT batch of chickens in the killing cones and it was awful. She placed mine on my van seat, I drove home and put them in the freezer without really looking. Sorry. They felt heavy tho.
I feared I'd have nightmares but I didn't. It will probably happen tho.

Just remember, Jesus cooked fish for his diciples. He didn't just eat fish, he cooked them. So that gives us a big green light to go ahead and cherish people who are created in God's image, and to enjoy animals and use them for the purpose God created them for. If we give them a good life and we are humane thoughout their lives, then I believe we are living according to God's plan.

thank you so much Grandma, it was my fault, I took them to her in the first place because I couldn't do it myself, I shouldn't have looked. my own stupidity.
I know I am a meat eater, and killing what I've raised has really put a whole new spin on giving thanks to God for what I eat. I am grateful the animals I had got to live the life they had here, running free in the grass under clear blue skies and puffy white clouds, things many chickens in America never see. I shoot deer and process them with my husband, but somehow haven't had the same feelings, maybe because I didn't "know" them personally. I wish I could just eat grass and get away with it but I'd have the poops pretty bad if I did. haha.
Im off tonight to "fat class" at church. See y'all later...

Jaime -- I do believe you've got two boys there, not one of each. Those BAs are inconsistent in the tail department from what I've seen. You've just got an almost rumpless one. I've had a few of those in the past.

I think the whole culling and method debate is a very sensitive one. Even in the most humane way such as having to put your dog down, I struggle. I think the method of culling has to work for both the animal and the human doing it. I personally am unable to do what may be the quickest method, but I also do not want to see any animal suffer. I have done it a couple different ways and find that drowning is best for me. I would say it takes between 10 and 30 seconds at the most. I would agree with Nova that there is probably more suffering with freezing, but maybe he sees it as the only way he can do it.

Looks like those of us on the west side are in for some more weather and wind here shortly.

They are both marans that I got from Jerry in Ada. Yes, they look like boys...the little stinkers.

If they both are i will need to rehome them or send them off to freezer camp. I am so hoping ONE of them is a girl.

That or I hatch some girls.... :: stares longingly at my bator with eggs ::

I just ran out to close the screen door on the coop and the girls were already roosting.....eh so I just shut them in for the evening. They only gave me 5 eggs today. Maybe because it's so dark and dreary. bleh

We were in the process of herding everyone in before that rain hit, but no luck. Man, that came in fast!
Nothing like slipping and sliding the chooks to bed.

I just want to say thanks to everyone as well. I was down for most the day thinking about poor Muffin.
