Hey Olive, looks like I will be in your neck of the woods on Dec 9th

My neck of the woods? What in the world could bring you here? A tour of empty corn fields?

I'm supposed to be on the road that day, but I may cancel and stay home to get things ready for my youngest's birthday which is the next day. If I end up being home and you're close and have a few extra minutes you should stop by. I'd love to meet you!

I am trying to decide which laying breed to get...I'd like to go back to RIR's but I really like the big dark eggs of the Wellsummers. Anyone have any comments or suggestions on large breeds that have worked out well for them in egg quality? (I would rather not have Isa's) One of the main reasons I parted with my speckled flock was quality/size of egg. I do have one hen left as my odd ball in the silkie coop.

My daughter's elderly rabbit passed a few months ago and it took everything in me not to call you immediately to fill that cage back up with a belgian. I said nope, no more rabbits. Well, then my mom took her to a swap and bought her a bunny because "she needs one". At which point I was all

I should have just filled the cage with a belgian and then we BOTH could have been happy.

BAs are good layers of consistently large, well-formed eggs. I'm ordering Barnevelders for their dark eggs (and because I love the looks of them) but don't have experience or know of anybody locally that does so the laying consistency and quality remains to be seen. I have heard only good reports on Barred Rocks, too. HH has some really beautiful BRs.

Then I must have bought your only reliable layer

Mabel lays a nice large tan/pinkish egg almost every day.

I can't wait until my FBCM's start laying. They will be 20 weeks around Valentine's day. I wonder if they will lay me a nice chocolaty brown present...

Chickenfest is a meet-up that is held yearly in June, usually in the Lansing area. There is a potluck BBQ, kids' games, people bring animals to swap and sell, etc.

Fowlfest is a poultry show that is held yearly in October. It used to be in Frankenmuth but I believe it's now held in Birch Run.

I know, I know... now I have to wait until another one kicks the bucket and given that the oldest one we've got at the moment is, I think, 4 years old? It could be a while...

Oh, I've had the Black Australorp's before a really liked them. I had a couple BR's a long time ago and loved them...got a few more and must've gotten some crappy layers cause thier eggs were small and weak flavored when cooked. I'd be interested in the BR's though if I could get some real nice ones who can lay!
