Twice a year is a great idea. But what about a more northern location? Lansing is so far south. What about a location more accessible to the northern folks?

Then you need to take charge and plan one for your area and we'll have to come there. Sounds fair. Sounds like fun, too. Once a year is not enough. We pick June hoping for warmer weather for all the chicks that come.

I'm jealous of your trip. I love riding through KY, TN, NC and such. I need a good long trip somewhere.

I used to work with mink. when they hit puberty, it's like they all discovered they could spray and started doing it for fun. you actually hear the pfffft sound as they unload. At breakfast time, you open the door to the barn and then heard it... pffft pfffffft pfffft and knew you were going to have to hold your breath and feed REALLY fast. yuck.

speaking of mink.. I saw a black one in the middle of the day going from a persons yard across the road and to another yard.... seemed strange to see him out in the middle of the day.

Did you try putting cardboard or wood along the sides of the trap to keep the dogs out, and maybe help guide unwanted critter into the trap? I assume the trap is in its original position... Cute dogs (nice top photo too)

No, we didn't but that is good a good idea. She has a problem resisting carrots and timothy hay...that's what drew her into the trap. LOL When I had my rabbits in the house it was a constant battle keeping the dogs out of their crates. I lost that battle and just put the rabbits outside.

If we want to plan another get together, we have plenty of space. No money needed, although the park was beautiful. We can use our house or the winery location ( has 4 acres attached).... plenty of room to roam. We also have a location in Muskegon or near School section lake we can use
I know BF put some money in the pot, but if extra is needed to cover expenses we will be happy to pitch in!!!
50/50 raffles are a good idea, but you have to be a non profit with a raffle license. I would be all for forming one if others were interested... you need a board and other nonsense.

There is absolutely no reason that we couldn't have both a spring and a fall Chickenstock. All it would take is for someone to decide that they want to spearhead it. You would need to find a location that offers the amenities necessary, ie. pavillion, tables, restrooms, play area for kids. With most sites you will have to pay in advance. There are other costs involved as well so you do can do as we have done in in previous years and pay them yourself and consider it money well spent for a nice outing, or get others to help with the costs.

This year was our 4th year and it was the first time we had a donation jar to try to recoop some of the costs. While it didn't quite meet the expense it was close and no one need feel bad. I think I didn't place it in a visible enough location, plus I should have announced it on line. I know I thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to the next time I can spend with you.

If anyone wants to step forward and assume the reins for a fall event don't hesitate to contact me for advice.

One additional note. I had been calling our door prize table a raffle and was contacted by BYC and informed that we can not have anything where we sell chances, not without getting permission and the necessary permits for the state.

If you have a public shop for your winery you may already be covered/aware, but if not -- and maybe even if so -- you need to think about liability before you agree to host something on your private land. 100+ people is a lot of people and a lot of risk for mishap. Remember it's not just MI BYC regulars that show up, but people are talking about advertising on CL, putting up fliers, etc to pull in the general public as well, which increases the risks.

I would certainly attend a fall one regardless of location. I believe that was one of the best days of my life and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If money is needed I will absolutely donate like I did to this one. Cheap price to pay for such a good time with good people.

Hi Michigan​

I'm so glad you all had a wonderful time at Chickenstock, those of you who went. Meeting "new" friends who are really "old" online friends is a wonderful experience. If I didn't live so far away I would have come to meet you all too! It really sounded like a lot of fun, and of course the "work" was worth it.

I hope you do have a fall party; especially for those who couldn't make the spring one.

CROWS: we are having such a bad time this year. They were hauling off our eggs, up to 8 a day, and now they are getting the ducklings. "MGSU" built a ladder trap, but so far, they aren't having any of it. We even put one of the "kills" in it - no joy. They even go into the goathouse to eat the goat food. Silly goats, letting them in like that. Anyone got any ideas?
