I learned the hard wayThat's a real bummer, because if u had only known, it would have been easy to pick females. (Black feathers with No head spot). When i first started getting chicks from feed stores, i fell into the same trap. Amongst auto-sexing straight-run breeds, the pullets had already been picked out before i arrived. I resorted to googling various chick breeds i was interested in right there in the store. For example, "Midnight Majesty Marans difference male female day old chick." Very sorry this happened to u, but it happened to me several times also, and no doubt countless others. Now u have a tip to help u select pullets from straight runs. Not All breeds show auto-sexing differences, but quite a few do. If u want pullets in breeds that are Not auto-sexing, best to pay a bit more for pullets.
Curious, mine did not have the head spot, but have white tips growing in on the feathers. Is it possible there are female and not midnight majesty maran? They do have feathered feet and we're marked as pulletsThat's a real bummer, because if u had only known, it would have been easy to pick females. (Black feathers with No head spot).
