Midnight majesty marans

Pics
I have two of the MMM's and I can report I'm going through feed this summer. LOL. I hope it translates to production. Even free ranging the bag of Purina is disappearing fast.

I also have a big chunky monkey Partridge Chantecler rooster that is new and he's in that feed bowl alot.
At any rate interesting to hear from others that the M & Ms are eaters.... Maybe thats where it's going instead of the roo...

My two at 10 almost 11 weeks.

I got a Rustic Rambler pullet from my local feed store that was reported to be a Black Copper Maran male and a Barred Rock female. Because my bird has an almost black comb and waddles, I reached out to Freedom Ranger and they confirmed it is one of their crosses. Well, I got my first egg from her the other day! It's a little lighter than I expected, but it's my darkest one with lots of speckles (and her first was a double yolker, too!).

What a beautiful egg, I love the speckles! How many weeks was she when she started laying?

I bought 5 MMM's ( all pullets :>( ) earlier this year from Rural King in Maryville, TN. They were all pitch black by the time they were 4 months old - no more white feathers. When they started laying, the egg color started out fairly light (just a little bit darker than regular brown eggs), but as they age the eggs are getting darker and darker - they are now about 6 months old and many of their eggs are a good chocolate brown color now as I had hoped for, so I'm happy with that. I had high hopes that with 5 chicks, the odds would be in my favor and I'd get at least a couple of cockrels, but the odds weren't in my favor ........ and after looking at Purely Poultry and Cackle Hatchery costs of shipping three males, I'll have to wait until next year to see if Rural King has some again. I can't see spending a hundred bucks just to get a rooster for breeding and increasing my flock. I don't show, or enter fairs, they are just for our own use - meat and eggs.
BTW, I have no way to post pix, so don't expect any unless I can get some way to do it, I'd like to do that, but it ain't happening! If you look at the pic of the eggs above (by hitchyourwagon), that dark one is about what we are harvesting now.
I wonder what they would look like if I crossed a roo with my black NN hen? j/k

Finally got my first few eggs from my Midnight Majestic Marans. In the first photo, with four eggs the lighter egg at the bottom is a regular store bought brown free range egg for comparison. They are a rich dark golden chocolate brown. Beautiful eggs. And I love the birds. They are just the best. Great personalities, temperament and very smart.
