I also use ice packs to the head and neck if I fail to take anything in time.
It's a funny thing about the ice packs. It's almost like they are more of a distraction than actually affecting the pain.
I have to keep moving them around to a new spot - sort of "fooling" the pain receptors in my head. I'm pretty sure it is the Vagus nerve that the ice is working on.
