MIGRAINES - update pg 9

I also use ice packs to the head and neck if I fail to take anything in time.

It's a funny thing about the ice packs. It's almost like they are more of a distraction than actually affecting the pain.

I have to keep moving them around to a new spot - sort of "fooling" the pain receptors in my head. I'm pretty sure it is the Vagus nerve that the ice is working on.

I am a major migraine sufferer and have 3 or more in any given month. Each one can last as much as 4 days if I am out of my meds because my DH is a long distance trucker and I have no one to drive to the pharmacy to get me what I need nor to the Dr for a knock out cocktail to end it. I have tension headaches as well that are also very bad and sometimes they themselves cause the migraine to begin. My Dr just started me on something called Topomax that is suposed to reduce the frequency. I have not been on it long enough to tell anything yet but am optomistic

Relpax or 2 Arthritis Strength Goody's powders with a hot coke seem to work better than anything else I have tried to combat the pain and stop the cycle if I can catch it early on. If it's a tension headache then flexeril and a fioricet work. I wish you luck in finding a med that works for you as I know how debilitating they are.

hmmm.... so a Goody at my house would be 3 Excedrin Migraine pills with 2 aspirins and a coke or cup of espresso! I'll have to try adding Aspirin to what I'm doing.

Right now I'm at 4 Excedrin Migraine pills, and the pain is mostly gone.... but I don't really think taking 4 is all that healthy for you. An hour and a half did pass between the first 2 and the last 2 I took.

Pumpkinpup: I agree!! - tension can lead to a migraine, but I've noticed those are different from the vascular kind.

Chickenaddict: I worry about having an aneurysm some day!

Migraines are a real pain, they have so much yet so little in common among us! PAIN PAIN PAIN

Mine worsened in 1999 after a nerve was knicked near my Carotid Artery during a surgical procedure to remove a tumor in my head.

Triggers include Perfume, strong scents, Fluorescent lights, foods, atmosphere changes, and so on.....but NEVER chickens!!

Current Medications - Topamax and Ultram - occasionally Tylenol with Codeine (I am one of the oddballs that responds to opiates for Migraine pain, that or I just like it!)

My migraines are daily type, on a pain scale of 3-4, with a surge/flare up every other week of a 7-8 on the pain scale that lasts for 2-4 days....or more if I'm not lucky...I am also a space cadet sometimes cause pain makes you that way. (Or is it the meds?)

MRI with evidence of white matter changes and lesions due to Migraines and Chronic High Blood Pressure.

Yes, the worst! But I dont mind! I am very functional, dont miss ANY work, I even have 286 vacation days saved up!! I'm a very active person, and I wont let this get me down! I just want you to know, Pain bites, and you need to find relief however you can. Anyone who says they have tried "everything" is not telling the truth, because there are too many possible combinations of therapy to try, natural and chemical, to have been tried by any one person!! Try what suits you, something may bring you relief, hopefully sooner than later! I do what works for me, and I am a relatively happy, mostly healthy, very active person!!

I have taken Midrin and it made me feel like I was on speed

I have taken blood pressure meds, anti depression meds, Imitrex and numberous other meds. I presently live on Ex. Migraine. I take two when I wake up, 2 at lunch and usually 2-4 as the evening progresses. I've had headaches (Migraine and Stress) for as long as I can remember. When I was young I had Reye Syndrome and the headaches I suffered with that were horrific. I had it before they ever knew what it was so I suffered through alot of pain and specialist as a guinea pig. Of course they grow worse every 28 days or so.

I watched Emergency ER last night on TV and they had a woman on there who suffered from migraines that eventually became unbearable. She was sent to a cardiac doctor and it was determined that she had a hole between the two chambers in her heart. The hole was not uncommon as it occurs during pregnancy but normally closes after birth. Hers did not but got larger. They went in and closed the hole and her headaches disappeared. I thought it was amazing.

Maxalt 10 mg, it is a prescription and works 95% of the time for me...I get migraines for days on end, any where from 3 to 5 days. Had them since I was in high school, back then they gave me glasses!!! Because I explained it as a headache in my eyes, stupid doctors!!! It runs in my family, grandmother, mother, myself and brother and I think my son might get them occasionally. When they don't work, then I hit stronger stuff! I often wait too long, thinking, gee maybe I'm just getting a normal headache and ibuprofen will work. Then it is a real struggle to get rid of them! Coffee does not work for me, it makes me sick to my stomach, stress can do me, and should I want an alcoholic drink, my limit is about one or I most often will feel like a sledge hammer hit me. Go into my room, pull down the shades and after 15 years, my kids know not to make noise!

I have had nasty mgranes for years and I have found that there are as many "cures" as there is suffers...

I am allergic to ALL narctoics..it makes me hallucinate...

so I am left with tylenol..or midol..(dont laugh they work great)

I know they say to apply cold to the back of the neck and the forehead..but this only makes it worse for me...

I need heat! I know the heat dilates the blood vessels and is supposed to make it worse but not in my case. I think the heat relaxes the muscles, but i guess it depends on what causes them..I get mine over my left eye and at the base of the skull
