Milk, bread and toilet paper southern style

It used to not be like that here before Katrina ( I live basically ground zero,Hancock County MS) No one did much more than get gas and maybe crackers,tuna...lil stuff here and there.... Now we only have one grocery store left within a 20 mile radius (of course being the big ripoff wally world) so It's like a horror movie A WEEK BEFOREHAND!!!! Seriously..newsman says tropical disturbance and phroom...... Psycholand....As if our Wallyworld wasn't jamm packed on a normal day!!!

I'm way prepared to stay home. We don't have a whole lot of food in the fridge but we have 3 loaves of bread and a half ham that my grandpa gave us for Christmas. I'll cook that tonight or tomorrow morning, so even if the power goes out we can eat sandwiches. I do live in town, so it won't be out for very long, but since we often get ICE rather than snow it does tend to kill the power lines.

Most of my cold/snow preparation is for the cars. I put in de-ice windshield wash, laid in an extra bottle of de-ice spray, dug out the ice scraper type items, put NEW wiper blades and tires on my truck (for rain) and mounted my old tires on spare rims with chains JUST IN CASE. Coz I deliver pizza for a living

but even if I don't have to work, I still have to make it about 4 miles out over some rather slick hills to water my chickens. Work or not, their water is gonna freeze and I gotta get out there to them at least once a day (if I can thaw it out good once, even if it skims over later they can peck through it). 4 miles is not that long to walk, but lugging water that far is just not an option IMO. I drive a Ford Ranger, which I absolutely LOVE, but honestly, is not the best in inclement weather. Hubbs has 4wd Explorer, but I'd really prefer not to wreck it as it is our newer car.

Speaking of pizza delivery......I have started tipping my pizza guy according to weather. Last couple times i ordered was because weather sucked....so even though my orders are relatively small (usually $10-20), I have started giving $5-10 tips to my delivery guy. I live about 10 minutes from the pizza place but one time he said he could only drive 15mph cause of ice. You couldn't pay me to drive in that stuff....so i tip accordingly

We appreciate it! It always irks me the people who say they can't come pick it up because of the weather, but they expect us to drive it out there in the exact same weather conditions that they refuse to drive in......and then don't tip, or tip $1 or something. Meh.
Last year one of our drivers was hit by a random truck that lost control on the ice - totaled her truck even though she wasn't having any trouble in the weather herself. I always say it's the OTHER drivers ya hafta worry about, as I can control my own speed and such that I need to maintain my safety, but not theirs.

I know.. i remember when i lived in Florida..
They got a dusting and cars were all pulled off the road. My father(who grew up up north) and i....were giggling at them driving by.
So..yeah..8 inches with ice can be a big deal down there. Well..ice is bad anywhere..

We think it's funny too how everything shuts down.. The best part is watching the Rednecks with their jacked up 4 wheel drives riding around pullin people out of ditches. People just don't know how to drive!!!

yet the "rednecks" are the ones saving rear ends! A country boy can survive

Even North Florida doesn't have to worry about snow though we did have an ice storm away back in '89.

It's hurricanes that cause the same sort of silliness as y'all get when the snow comes in. Gainesville is a college town so it can be particularly funny. Four roommates at the register in front of me with eight cases of beer but no water! I did suggest to them that by the time they drank all that beer and ate all those pretzels and chips they might want a drink of water and the light bulb went off.

What did I buy? Cookies, actually. We're always prepped for stuff like this, but it's a family tradition that when a hurricane is going to hit that we stock up on all the goodies and junk that we do not ordinarily keep at the house such as cookies, Little Debby cakes, and that sort of thing. "Man, look at that wind! There goes that pine tree in the pasture... Say, how about open that bag of fudge cookies!"

I have the same philosophy.. if we are going into lock down.. we might as well FEAST!

I had to add this...you mentioned the ones in line with only beer...!!!... The day after Katrina hit...people are obviously looting the stores, and what do these freakin idiots staying in the apartment next to us do?...They steal a buggy full of HOT azz beer!!!!...no can goods...no water...no food....Just beer!!!! Can you believe that?!!! Needless to say we had a buncha drunks outside raising all kinda hell in the middle of a hot azz night with dozens of people wanting to whup em up so they'll shut up. Only in MS...lol...

haha, this is funny....and the reason is because when we get a big snow storm or ice storm, we like to enjoy hot cocoa or coffee with cookies while we look out the window. lol....

my house is always stocked tot he max, never know when the power will go out and if it does when it will come back on. though they are very good at getting things done when its the middle of winter and its -30

when we get the winter storm alerts, I pick up chips or cookies for the kids and double check batteries.

how much it is really is not relevant. In the south any amount of snow on the roads is subject to melt then refreeze. The result is the road is a massive sheet of ice. We do not have plows or salt trucks either.
