Milk, bread and toilet paper southern style

how much it is really is not relevant. In the south any amount of snow on the roads is subject to melt then refreeze. The result is the road is a massive sheet of ice. We do not have plows or salt trucks either.

Right. Hubbs works overnights, so going to work is usually not a problem because it's been all day of road travel and the roads are rutted enough, but coming home at 7am after the overnight re-freeze.....well, if I were him I'd probably walk (it's probably less than 3 miles)

A.T. Hagan :

Even North Florida doesn't have to worry about snow though we did have an ice storm away back in '89.

It's hurricanes that cause the same sort of silliness as y'all get when the snow comes in. Gainesville is a college town so it can be particularly funny. Four roommates at the register in front of me with eight cases of beer but no water! I did suggest to them that by the time they drank all that beer and ate all those pretzels and chips they might want a drink of water and the light bulb went off.

What did I buy? Cookies, actually. We're always prepped for stuff like this, but it's a family tradition that when a hurricane is going to hit that we stock up on all the goodies and junk that we do not ordinarily keep at the house such as cookies, Little Debby cakes, and that sort of thing. "Man, look at that wind! There goes that pine tree in the pasture... Say, how about open that bag of fudge cookies!"

Well I rembember that snow, but we have seven bridges in town (only six then) only one of them was of low enough grade to salt/sand the closest snow plow was in atlanta GA and tthere were lots of power outages. It paralized the city because the city core is inside where the river makes an 's' turn. Because the original non steep bridge was too low for river traffic and old ( Fuller Warren) it has been replaced. It is supposed to be 20ISH tonight. Fun.

I don't go out unless it is life or death. #1 because folks down here don't know how to drive in the snow. They run into each other in the rain. Snow is 100x's worse. #2 I live on a small mountain in the western piedmont of NC. To get down the mountain you have to back out of my driveway which is a hill onto another hill, go around a curve, go up a hill, down a hill, around a curve, up another hill, currrrrrrrrrrrrrrrve, down a hill, curve, down a currrrrrrrrrrrrrvy hill, onto the bridge over the river, around another curve, up a hill, curve, curve the other way, down a hill, up a hill, curve, downnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn currrrrrrrrrrrrrrve, curve, up hill. Stop light.

And that's just getting to the interstate and 2 more icey bridges

As long as it doesn't get too deep to make it to the barn or last over a couple months I ain't gonna worry. Just fire up the woodstove, light the lanterns and lamps and go on with life. Might even get to catch up with my sleepin'. I ain't skeerd.

wait a sec... My batteries in this laptop only last about a half hour... and with no power I won't be able to get on BYC

HELP!! Now I'm skeerd!

hahaha yeah we actually tend to go outside more when we're iced in. For one thing, lack of having to be at work, etc. but also lack of electronic entertainment. Plus, it's super-easy to track stuff in the snow which gives us something silly to do. During the ice storm of 1999 we also adopted more of a farmer's schedule. Went to bed early coz it was dark, and got up at the crack of dawn coz of going to bed early. It felt nicer to be "in tune" with nature that way, as we were without power for about 2 weeks. We had a wood stove for heat/cooking and a nice Aladdin oil lamp.

I stay up way too late at night on the computer

and it's only encouraged by the fact that I don't have to be at work till after 10am so I can sleep "in" later than most people.

The only thing that worries me right now is that we are living at a home that is non self sufficent. (Sp I know, give me a break, I have bronchitis)
We have 2 tiny fireplaces that can't be run at the same time, and with me being sick I couldn't go out and get firewood until tomorrow. Guess how much the prices are going to be?

I have a charcoal grill for cooking if I need to, but everything else, ugh, it's not here in this house. I hate feeling unprepared and knowing it, especially with possible ice on the way.

They are still calling for 5 to 7 inches in Gainesville and north of here. Then add some ice on top and it wont be pretty. The highs are still gonna be very low most of the week, right at or above freezing until about Saturday. The lows will be in the mid to upper 20's. Its gonna be a nasty week in the south...

I knew in 3rd grade that I was to forever be a 'flat lander' when we drove through the Smokies and I barfed all the way.
I got sick just reading that.

6 - 8" that will melt and be gone within a few days even if it does re freeze

slow down IF you need to drive anywhere....

sand is better then salt

Here we have milk that is is in a tetra pack that you dont need to have in the fridge. Its good for 12 months... so we stock up on a few packs and change them every 6 months
canned goods
we can live without bread for a few days

its really not all that bad! snow can be your friend

I think a lot of this is media hype!
