Milk, bread and toilet paper southern style

is it snowing yet???

2 years ago they said we were going to get a little snow and ice....no big deal. Well it iced so bad that it took out everyones power. The weight of the ice snapped branches and took out trees and power lines. Our power was out for almost 2 weeks. The second night we finally got a generator from TSC after my husband took the Jeep to town while driving over small trees in the road and cutting the larger ones with the chainsaw. The water company didnt have generators so we didn't have water either. We did manage to keep the house at 60* using 2 space heaters. We grilled alot and used the hotplate to cook on.

In 2002, we had a really bad ice storm and were without power for 2 weeks. Let me tell you, every time they predict a huge storm, I make sure that the house is completely clean and that we have ALL the laundry done! That storm in '02 caught me the day before laundry day, and it SUCKED. We didn't have a food problem though. We just buried the stuff in the freezer in snow under the deck and it stayed rock solid! With the wood fireplace we were in good shape. We kept the milk outside on the porch in the shade, and it never went bad or got warm! Glad I was nursing my youngest, it would have been a huge pain to try to heat up bottles on the grill and worry about clean water. Just the same, if they are predicting even just a few flurries, your presence is required at the nearest grocery store whether you need anything or not.

Y'all are making me really glad I didn't run to the store. Thought about if for all of two seconds, but said NO after reading this stuff. We got snow earlier, none stuck... drizzle overnight expected and temps in the 20's... it's tomorrow that will be nasty.

One more reason to be thankful we're HSing... and that I keep a stocked pantry.

I knew in 3rd grade that I was to forever be a 'flat lander' when we drove through the Smokies and I barfed all the way.
I got sick just reading that.

Well shoot, this is only a little mountain. The fun ones are NW of here. Outside of Ashville Rte. 209. On some of those curves you can look in the back of your truck while going round them.

ROFL I do the same thing. And, I use a child size snow shovel to scoop out the bedding from the large quail pens...

Snow shovel? Ya mean crap shovel? I aint used that thing for anything but quail poo in the last 3 years, until this year.

I havent seen a great deal of SNOW over in west alabama, but there is probably a quarter inch of ice pellets in my drive way and I slid, skated and slipped my way through the back yard to lock the chooks up early. I have never seen it sleet like this... its cool as long as the power stays on. I really hope we get some snow to play in though.. the ice pellets dont make good snow balls.. kinda smarts a little...

Ugh driving on sleet is pretty awful. Not only is the ice slippy, but the little balls move around under your feet or tires. Bleh!
What we have been getting is very dry powdery snow, which is good, except it doesn't make snowballs either coz it won't stick together! lol

Everyone be careful driving, and in addition to the practically mandatory appearance at your local grocery store, don't forget to gas up your vehicles and take some extra home to hoard.
