i really like the color on the hen in the group pic that you can only see her cushion. looks like she has very nice chevrons

That is Pepper. She doesn't have alot of pattern but really nice type. I should put her with Diablo, the black Mottled/MF cross. They seem to both have the best type. Spring is going to be so fun!
- I looked again at the group pic and if you mean the hen that is in the middle, kind of behind the roo - that is Mille one of my origional birds that I got from YonderOak as a chick. She is really well marked and a nice shape but mI think my pullet, Molly is going to be even nicer.

What a neat project !- (I teach Middle School Art)
I am a novice but after 1 1/2 years with Mille Fleurs I can say they will change so much in both color and type. You really have to be patient.

You have some really nice hens going on there, some of your roos are looking great and I know you are excited about the new year of breeding! It is funny that Diablo and Angel look a lot like my Dan and Wizard which are brothers as well, and came out looking like your boys!

They have some great color! It will change drastically as they grow up though. I would part with all the males and keep the girls back to see about using later, if you can. They may round out as they get older, right now they are looking long bodied but that may change as they mature. I would hang onto girls as much as possible and maybe sell later if they do not mature as well as you would have hoped. That is what I do and still sell a lot of girls but wind up with a lot better quality down the road.

Welcome, Beth!
This is a fun project and the birds are always so pretty to work with. Your little group looks very pretty. As you work with them and breed you will find the color and pattern will vary a lot but it is fascinating. I have found pattern easy to get and was able to obtain it in 2 generations but the type was not good so I breed for type and let pattern fall into place. Focus on type, combine the birds that fit together well (as in what one lacks and another is strong in should be bred together) and are carrying the right color and pattern genes and it will come together. It may not be as soon as we would like but it will get here and we hope to get them accepted into the standard.

Thanks,
I am still learning about the Cochin type and how to recognize the type I want. It is interesting to see the color change. Cockrel #2 is already showing more red on his wings. I love the way they run to meet me when I go to the pen.

Besides being the correct Cochin type, what color pattern are most people are striving for?

Beth
