Mille Cochin Info

I feel so bad... I really can not decide if I want to sell my MFCs or not. I was looking over my flock and I am really liking a lot of my birds. Even if the boys are douche bags. I like Bridgette's type now that she's older. The babies from Byron and Bridgette don't show either of their type when they are young. For some reason, it has taken the oldest girls I have from them nearly a year to really get any cushion. They are still widening. Bridgette was like that, so maybe it's just slow development?

I asked Dewey what he thought, since he has to fund feeding them and building new coops/pens. He told me not to sell what I like. I was surprised, to be honest. Usually he's all money oriented. I think what I will do is I will go ahead and sell a couple older girls that have literally given me nothing worth saving. I will deal with the boy's bad attitudes and give the project more time, I guess. The boys have been on their worst behavior this past week (so bad that Byron was removed from his girls to teach him a lesson today)! And I don't even have 2yrs into the MFCs.
Goodness! I can't even imagine having that many males just waiting to attack. That's mind boggling. Gotta be the hormones. I usually give my birds once chance. They decide to go for me, that's it and I get a nice little dinner.

Some of my Mille's from this weekend's hatch. I'm always amazed at the various colors they hatch out. What do you all make of the purely yellow chick. Kind of odd, especially since Dad is Mottled and the various hens he's with are pretty dark too.

I've had pure yellow chicks hatch. They show their true color later on - usually calico.

My 2nd MFC of 2013 has hatched today! It needed help getting out; shrink wrapped. I now know why they offer a 5 gallon bucket for water. This Sportsman goes through that whole container of water in less than 2 days.

That was fun Mike, thanks!
Welcome Mindylee
Bobbi I know, my Sportsman uses more water then my Genesis, and my last hatch had shrink wrapped chicks. This is the only time, though, I've hatched hundreds of chicks since I've gotten it and only now had shrink wrapped

I'd had plenty of experience with shrink wrapping in the Genesis though..
Adorable chicks Martha

Love the photos! And the video is awesome, Mike! I love seeing how much Peppermint has grown and she has changed a bit, too! Her feathering looks so cool on her neck!

On the mean roos....I am amazed! None of my Mille Fleur project birds have ever been mean. I had a little one early on in my program that did attack a friend of mine. Well, sort of attacked. He bumped the back of his leg a few times. We were laughing so hard it hurt the poor little roos feelings, I think. However, he wasn't a breeder bird and he went to freezer camp.
Now Rascal, my Mottled roo, likes to attack the food cup when I pour fresh food in but hasn't attacked me personally. However, I still flip him on his back and leave him to paddle in the air if he does this. None of his sons have ever been bad so I figure it is a weird quirk he has.

I refuse to breed a horrible temperament and am not sure if that is why I have good roosters or if it is how I interact with them. They probably have seen us grill enough to know where bad birds go around here.

I breed for these birds here in Michigan. Im new to BYC and have been learking and trying to find everyone else who loves these beautiful birds. I breed mostly cochins BUT do have a few Millies, silkies, frizzsz, sizzls, and 1 frevi in the flock. But have about 30 of the calicos. :) Not sure how to add pics but ya can see 1 of them on my name fourm pic!
do you have mille fleur cochins? or mille fleur d'uccle? mille fleur is just a color, not a breed...

calico cochins are just an offshoot of the mille fleurs, basically mis-marked birds. genetically they are all the same.
