Mille Cochin Info

Pearl is beautiful. I love Fiona. I'd put her in with a nice Black Mottled. I sure wish some of my girls would start laying. This waiting game is killing me. :)
Mine too - I just got a nice used Sportsman and a hatcher and now no eggs!
If we depended on my birds to feed us we would starve.

Mike how did I miss those chick pics??

We're all glad you're getting back into the swing of things, Lynne

I just got a Corronation Sussex, not to cross but to replace my Wheaten Ameraucanas that are just too flighty for my liking. I will miss the blue eggs but I like super friendly birds. Just about every breed is flightyer (sp) than Cochins. My Blue Marans pair are very tame but I hand raise them.
I had Black LaFleche at one time. They were sooooo beautiful but I could hardly ever even get a picture.
Cochins are still the standard for the personality traits I look for.

On another note - I REALLY need to study bird genetics - need to get the Calico out of my Mille Fleur hens even though they are so pretty.
breeds that are as good as cochins for personality (IMO of course) are the Dorking and the Swedish Flower Hen... my 'dottes are nice but not as people oriented...

if anything the swedes may be 'worse' than any other breed for wanting to be underfoot. LOL

I haven't been on here in a while.. just stopping by to say hi and see everyone's pics and share my progress.

Tripp, you're going to get gold pullets from that pair but, silver males. You probably already realize this. Silver is a sex linked gene and can be a you know what to get rid of. I would try and get a mottled hen to put with the roo. That will give you more color while adding some type to give you better shaped offspring. You can probably find some close. good luck

As for me, I'm still tinkering with wheaten based (left) and partridge based (right) birds. I have a few males I kept back to put on last year's breeder hens. One is distinctly wheaten with his vibrant orange color while the partridge boys have their fabulous type and mahogany hackle and saddles... These girls are two of 4 girls I kept this year. I lost my roos very early so didn't get much late in the season. Lesson learned (keep a pen of boys)

I am also adding in a little blue and chocolate for fun. This boy has both mille and mottled parentage. His chicks are all hatching wheaten or black mottled.

I plan to keep both partridge and wheaten going.. Aside from the awesome type in the eb birds, the coloring is smudgey... not sure if it will clean up.
No, I didnt know about the sex linked gene!! Thank you so much for telling me this!!! I only got girls ( how I managed that I have no idea!) but I only got girls the first hatch I did. No silvers for me! I have a mottled hen in with him too. We will see what she throws with him! Thanks again!

Hi everyone, totally newbie here. I was looking for a new project, and County Boy always posted such beautiful pictures of his birds, so I decided to ask about cochins. Long story short, I now have some buff barred bantam cochins and some mille fleur bantam cochins. I'm slowly reading through this thread from the beginning and it's very helpful. I'm still working on learning what to look for in a bird in terms of the breed standard, and I'm trying to learn the genetics behind this color. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here's the pair that County Boy sold me yesterday:

I also got a little mille fleur frizzle pullet too. I'm in love with these birds already and can't wait till I get some eggs to hatch.
