Mille Cochin Info

It just hatched and it's yellow. So it has to be mf x mf. I'll post a pic of it once it fluffs out.

I have a feeling it's a boy for some reason. He's so sweet. I think he imprinted on us, lol. He was snuggling into my and my son's hands. When we took our hands away he would scramble towards any skin he could see - face, arm, hand, whatever - he didn't care.

I am doing that cross too to help improve the body type on my mfcs. I'm using a black mottled father with yellow leakage in neck feathers on mfc hens. He's my only choice I had of roo (would rather no leakage as he'd be great on my blue/black mott hens....but you do with what you have) So this little cockerel from the mating is now showing yellow leakage on neck feathers.

Then of the younger chicks from similar mating.....some have faint brown tips in feathers

But crossing those back to MF project Cochins gave me this.........

The chest is looking great but the back and tail is still black. I can't wait to see her at 1 year old.

Nadine, considering so many are having trouble with no black on the breast, I'd say you're off to a great start. Good job sticking with it. You have to trust in the genetics and, even though HUGE progress isn't immediate... it is there. I have a hen that is very similar to your black mottled with red leakage. She's definitely going to be a big part of my program for the next few years.

And, Troy, colorwise your roo is making up for what your hen is lacking and that is...

black on the breast. Gosh, I feel like I've said that 8 times in two days... I really get on these tangents

It's not a big deal. Many of us are in the same boat... but, if you hatch a bunch, you should improve pattern relatively quickly. Typewise, you'll have some nice yard candy but, if you're really interested in starting a breeding program, I'd hunt down some nice SQ cochins of either buff columbian or mottled and try to get some fluffier butts

Ideally, buff columbian hens for your roo and a mottled roo for your hen.

Today I am at the Delmarva Show with my birds, did pretty well. I was disappointed to see I had the only 3 MFC's there, but at least I got mine out there for people to see. I gave "Ninja" away to a good customer/friend who just wants pets/eye candy. My new Roo "The Tidy Bowl Man" will be taking over in my breeding pen. Just got a new girl from MrsChickenDad too. Now I am back on track. Also weird was my Splash pair were the only Splash Cochins at the show. Why aren't there more Splashes at shows?
