I have quail, but with how high they can fly, I am finding that the basic quail cage is not tall enough. What is the best height for a quail? One where they won't injure their heads when they happen to get frightened??

I recently acquired a rabbit cage that has a coated wire flooring. The cage is about 20 inches tall. If my Coturnix quails get startled and jump upwards, will they break their necks? Would adding foam cushion on the ceiling help? Or is this height okay?

Quail can jump at least two feet into the air. 20 inches isn't high enough to prevent head bumps. If you wanna do quail, safest bet is to get a cage where they cannot jump, or one that is at least 4 ft or taller to be on the safe side.

Yeah ideally you either want it too short for them to injure themselves or tall enough that they can't possibly hit the ceiling.

No
Clip their wings. How tall is your cage?
Not sure exactly. The cage we had them in is about two inches above their head. The hospital cage we had to keep them in is only a bit taller. (Thats another story). The ones in question were three females that were mostly healed already.... Now they injured themselves in a different way. Thinking now I should probably put padding on the top of it somehow....

Aha. A larger pen will probably fix that, but some birds just don't get along.
We do intend to make them a bigger pen outside. And also have another multi sectioned cage coming by mail. Hopefully those will be enough.
