Minnesota!

Needing to sell one maybe two of my roosters.
Barnyard Mix, almost 7 months old, very pretty roo. He is the more dominant of the three I have.

I only have 7 chickens and three of them are roos. (Bought a straight run.) Not ready to hatch any chicks yet.

I'm in the North Branch area. Don't have internet at home, but I will try to get a picture of him uploaded.

When do chickens usually start their first molt?
When they molt is sort of dependent on how good of a layer, or somehow the two are linked. In fact, that is one way to assess who is a good layer and who is not, early molters are generally poorer layers. Also, those that take a very long time to get through their molt.

Pretty much now is when most will begin. I have quite a few who are dropping feathers in just the last week. It normally starts with them losing the big tail feathers, the you see them falling from the neck too.

My MIL is caring for the birds while we are away and she says we got 18 eggs today which would be 18/18 of our layers. We have never once had a 100% day as our 5 leghorns were already about 18 months or more and 'slowing down' when my aunt gave them to us. Either the stars aligned or somebody laid late yesterday
Maybe they were saving up with the stormy weather this week and just all needed to purge at once? ;)

I thought I would see what you guys think of one of my EEs. She has the puffy cheeks like crazy.
She also hs feathers that spin around her neck and it looks a lot like a boa.
Now is the feathers around the neck common?
Maybe she has a little Frizzle kicking around in her genes? I have some that sweep to the sides but not forward like that. Or maybe she is part Frill pigeon? LOL

Fly fisherman are like that.

I had a young friend that came over to do some shooting, when I still had Ole. He asked about Ole, I told him I was going to be getting rid of him because of his serial rapist tendencies and I was rooster heavy. The guy asked "how much would you sell him for?"

I asked "why?"

He them revealed he was a fly fisherman and made his own flies and he would love to have his feathers. I, of course, refused and told him I could not do that to him.

I am afraid to have him come around here now that I have Creamettes, he could steal one!
I have some of these Barred crosses, ask him if he is interested in some of mine. I think they call them Grizzlies if they are the Barred type. That was a niche I considered when I started with chickens to supplement the feed bill, selling capes for tying.

I have 10 acres and had 105 birds att peak this year and trust me.... There is room for MANY more

I had about 1000 birds one Summer and I live on less than 10 acres, so I agree! I can help supply your capacity too if needed!

Good Luck!

Talk to Holms, He can sell Ice to Eskimos. If you find someone wanting your roosters or say a large number of Creamette roosters send them to me.

This time of the year there seems to be a real surplus of roosters.

Speaking of roosters.

I have decided I really like my little BA rooster. He has a beautiful sheen to him and I need a replacement for Ernie ( this is one of Ernie's kids).

I picked up a BBB to check its chest and crop and again it cried like a baby. The BB is close to 20 pound now, he is getting huge. The little, and I mean little, maybe 3-4 pounds tops, BA rooster came running over making that noise/sound a rooster does when he is ready to fight to protect his flock. He has guts, and is brave, so I think he is off the market. I have been watching him for a couple weeks because of his actions. I think he has won the spot.

Minnie how many "back up" roosters of each breed do you keep over winter, just in case one dies or something happens?

I will be keeping ED, head rooster, partridge Chanticler, just for his protection, manners and large size to the barnyard mixes.

I will keep Ray my cream bar rooster.

What do I need for back ups, one or two of each?

Also if anyone has partridge chanticleer hens for sale, I am interested.

I think my hummingbirds are getting ready to leave. :( They are at the feeder all the time and there are many. Too sad that it is migration time already!! What do you all think of the threat of avian flu cases rising again with migrations?? Just read an article that they expect it to increase with the fall migrations. I am not gonna stress about it. I have no power over wild birds coming or going and there is no way I can have a air tight bio secure facility. Just fresh on my mind since I read the article.

Mistah how is down south treating ya?

Coffee- any updated pics of the babies loving their new home? I just love me some pictures! Love to see everyone's animals and set ups/coops.

I have been watching mine since you said this.

I think mine are gone too, which is about 2 weeks too early. I have not had one in 3-4 days.

I never did have many this year. last year I went through a feeder every week to 10 days. I have only filled once this year.

If only firewood wasn't $6 for a few sticks at state parks... Another 'it's for the good of the environment' rule that is also really good at lining the governments pockets.

Hopefully when the rest of camp clears out today we can scavenge their leftovers and have a decent fire tonigt

We paid 7 at Fall Lake. It was oak and that firepit could not burn gas if it tried. There was no opening at the bottom of the circle to draw air from underneath. It was completely enclosed in a "protective" cement casing around the iron. I couldn't get over it. As a result the sticks would smoke and sputter a little flame here and there.

Just the way they like it for safety I'm sure. No big bonfires like we like. Ha! Anyways we found the stingy would bundles enough as their fire pits completely sucked.
