Minnesota!

what i did this morning... made dust bath for the run for winter.. added organic peetmoss, sand from the yard and DE... logs for them to hang out on ... im thinking i should get some rope out and strap logs together so none of them fall over and land on one of the girls..
What an absolutely awesome coop!

The first baby that has ever hatched on our farm!

If that is an actual tuft on the head, then this might not apply.... Normally, when you have a chick that has a barred daddy, and the chick has that big white spot, it means cockerel

Sounds wonderful! Good luck with your new adventure, can't wait to read along!

She is looking way better, great job Mama! You'll be a chicken vet in no time!

Hahaha! I know what you mean, people at my work have asked me if i'm going to do this. ;) nooo, but don't think I haven't thought about bringing them into the basement on super cold days!

Go in and get warm, get a nice hot drink and a sammich.

@scandiafowl , so here is a story of rats. I've been reading this ladies thread for a long time now, but the rats come into the picture at post #746. if anyone has time to burn, feel free to start at the beginning of the thread, there are ups, there are downs, there are naysayers, there are supporters. it is a wonderful thread, but be careful, you will get pulled in and won't be able to wait to see what happens next... like I said, if you have time in the winter for reading? lol

Rats

WEasel traps work for rats too!

Got some news today, son and dil are moving back in.. Apparently I could use the help.. They love me and are concerned I might be lonely and am working to hard around here, I guess I'm getting older and it's not good for my health to do all this alone. Since my husband is gone now my son thinks it is his responsibility to be the man of the house.. LOl.. This should be interesting as long as they remember there is only one Queen and I'm it... And really how old do they think I am.. I still think of myself as young and hot.. Well not as young and still kinda hot.. LOl..

From what i've been reading you are doing great and getting alot done, that chicken coop is outstanding you should be very proud of yourself. Doesn't look like you need help to me, but who am I?

I'll tell you this, when my daughter moved back in after college while looking for a job last year, it added more work onto my plate! I love her to death

Good luck!

Finally sold out. Can hardly bend finger to type
after the farmers market i went and participated in a mobile meal pack from Feed My Starving Children with some youth from my church. How much fun was that! we packed enough dry meal to feed 90 kids for a year that will be sent to mission groups in Haiti. If you ever have the chance, i really recommend doing it. They also have a few permanent sites near the cities.

After running around lugging tubs of rice and soy protein, i am definitely not cold!

I know i dont personally know you or your son, but i am curious if he needs to be close to you just as much as he thinks you need him close. I know i would be a total wreck for a long time if I lost my dad, and us boys have unique ways of dealing with emotions sometimes (Read: most of the time)

Ok, out to be productive! it turned out to be a cool but sunny and nice day here! ive got wood to stack, and my camper to winterize!

I forgot to metion yesterday - I moved all of my bags of oats out of my shed where I am having rodent issues (NOT in my chicken coop thankfully, based on your talks of rats chewing on chickens)
and I found one of my missing mouse traps! it was wedged between a feed sack and my wood stove and had half of a mouse in it. looked like it was partially eaten.....
will rats do that? am i dealing with a weasle?

Frankly i would rather a rat than a weasle as far as what ive heard about weasles doing to chickens....

either way I am setting my traps tonight! i wanted to get all of my feed/grain/flock blocks out of there first

Coffee are you over the age of 80 or what is the deal with your son? Perhaps you have some physical limitations that we are not aware of? If neither of those situations applies, it is nice for your son to be concerned but he may be a little on the over protective side?

I had decided that if Ralphie had not been heard from by today that I was going to initiate a gathering of his friends in the Duluth area and hold a memorial service. I fear that he may be gone, but I would not want for him to be forgotten!

i was out working in the sun and wouldnt you know it here comes several of my hens playing keep away with a mouse! they chased each other for over 15 minutes until they flushed a second mouse and ran that one down too!

So there you have it... Myth proven, chickens will run down mice given the opportunity!
